🌱 BK Leads In Washington + Gang Members Convicted + Sunday To-Dos
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

Hello again, everybody! It's me, Carlie, your host of the Brooklyn Daily. Here are all the things you need to know about what's happening locally, including...
- BK poised to lead in the House and Senate
- Four convicted in gang-related crimes
- An artists tells the story of Hurricane Maria 5 years later
But first, today's weather:
🌤 Partly sunny, windy and cold. High: 40 Low: 28.
Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. Brooklyn is poised to lead Democrats in Washington, taking top spots in both the House and the Senate. Both Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer are Brooklyn residents. As Nancy Pelosi steps down, Representative Jeffries is favored to become the leader of the House Democrats, while Schumer will continue to lead the Senate. Brooklyn is one of the most diverse places to live in the United States: It's Jewish, it's Black, it's Puerto Rican, Italian, Polish, Russian, German, Caribbean, Chinese, Korean, Indian, Central American, Yemeni, Turkish and much, much more. Not only do Schumer and Jeffries bring the "hometown attitude" that folks liken to the New York borough, they also carry the representative weight of a multicultural, multilingual, and multi-faceted corner of the nation. "Brooklyn's in the house! Brooklyn's definitely in the house," said Alan Rosen, the third-generation owner of Junior's Restaurant, which has been on the same corner of Brooklyn—Fulton and DeKalb Avenues—since 1950.

2. Four members of the Folk Nation Gangster Disciples have been convicted of gang-related shootings in Brooklyn. A federal jury in Brooklyn convicted four people on multiple counts of of a "superseding indictment charging them with conspiracy to murder rival gang members in-aid-of racketeering, attempted murder in-aid-of racketeering, attempted assault with a dangerous weapon in-aid-of racketeering, assault with a dangerous weapon in-aid-of racketeering and possessing, brandishing and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence in connection with multiple shootings in Brooklyn in November 2020." The judge called the actions of the convicted "senseless," in their violent retaliation for "the theft of a gold chain," that terrorized members of the Brooklyn community. Two of the convicted face a mandatory 20 years in prison, and the other two a mandatory 10.
3. A Brooklyn based, Puerto-Rican curator is educating her community about the enduring devastation of 2017's Hurricane Maria. Artist Maria Guerrero has assembled the work of more than 20 artists in an exhibit that tells the story of the disaster, five years later. "No Existe Un Mundo Poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria" is showing at the Whitney Museum. In September 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated the entire island of Puerto Rico, killing almost 3,000 people and marring the lives of thousands of others with trauma, broken infrastructure, ecological devastation, and forced, economically-driven migration. Maria Guerrero of Brooklyn was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and now she is shedding light on the story of her home: a place that was still recovering from 2017 when Hurricane Fiona struck earlier this year.

From my notebook:
- 📸 Support the arts! Theodore Samuels just annouced their first solo photo exhibit in Brooklyn: "Themed as a reflection of roads less traveled and the human need for art and play, 'The Games We Play' was created in abundance, which I have experienced in my life. We are a strange grouping of people on this planet. I find that the only thing that separates us can be simplified into one word: culture. And culture is defined by the way we use the word "art". The way we use the same tools, yet slightly differently, the way we see the same material yet understand it with our unique eye," says Samuels. Learn more at the link. (eastnewyork.com)
