Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. "Master franchiser" CEO of BK Lobster is in hot water after failing to register his own. Rodney Bonds's food operation attracted media attention for its $100 gold-infused lobster roll and locally-inspired plates like the "BedStuy B.I.G.G.I.E. Roll," while also seeing multiple locations pop up. But, some the company's launch in 2019, BK Lobster locations have begun to mysteriously shutter across the borough. Brooklyn Paper and THE CITY investigated the issue and found that the seafood chain expanded rapidly across the country and sold multiple franchises in New York without registering them, a blatant violation of state law. Bonds has admitted to violating the New York law requiring franchisors to register with the state attorney general's office, and the company is now facing several lawsuits from franchisees and investors alleging fraud.
2. Soccer superstar Killian Mbappé took his PGA vacation to New York and met Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets. Mbappé was granted 10 days vacation for returning to club play so soon after a high-minutes run at the World Cup in Qatar, where he earned the Golden Boot for scoring eight goals (including a hat-trick in the final!). Apparent NBA fans, Paris Saint-Germain duo Kylian Mbappé and Achraf Hakimi flew to New York to watch Kevin Durant in action for the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night. After the Nets ended the night as winners, Durant gifted Nets jerseys to Mbappé and Hakimi.
3. MetaMoon Festival held its first event in Brooklyn, showcasing an incredible roster of Asian talent. The event was held at the Barclay's Center with a 19k capacity; seemingly ambitious for a concert of artists perhaps no as well known in the United States. However, the represented talent—from former EXO member, Lay Zhang to Taiwanese RnB artist, ØZI—have clearly developed dedicated local fanbases that are poised to blow up in the near future. That being said, fans traveled from across the world to see these artists perform in Brooklyn; be it pop, jazz, RnB, or hip hop, the music transcended cultural and language boundaries.
