“I’d like to extend my deepest congratulations to the UN World Food Programme on winning the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to combat world hunger, an issue more pertinent now than ever as COVID-19 disrupts global food systems and leaves countless people on the brink of hunger. Unfortunately, we’ve seen the effects of this right here in New York City. The number of food-insecure New Yorkers, already unacceptably high before the pandemic, is expected to reach 38 percent of our city’s overall population by the end of this year. Not surprisingly, economically disadvantaged New Yorkers have been hit hardest. Inequities in access to affordable, healthy food contributes to the myriad injustices our city still faces, from a school system that consistently fails students of color to a public safety crisis that primarily victimizes young Black and Brown people. We must do everything in our power to address this issue and ensure that nutritious food is accessible to all our residents — regardless of race or socioeconomic status.”
