Activists in Greenpoint are taking a stand against National Grid, who proposed to build two new gas vaporizers at the Greenpoint Energy Center. Councilmember Jennifer Gutiérrez was joined by a dozen of her colleagues from Brooklyn and Queens to call on the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation and Public Service Commission to reject National Grid's proposal ahead of public hearings on the project. These additional gas vaporizers would perpetuate the use of and reliance on fossil fuels in the city, a step that Gutiérrez dubbed unnecessary and a threat to the community. (Brooklyn Paper)

Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:

1. The Brooklyn Appeals Court sat its first all-African American Bench, making history. Justice Valerie Brathwaite Nelson presided over the four-justice panel, which included Justices Cheryl Chambers, Paul Wooten, and William Ford. (Law.com)

2. The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway has been, well, a pipe dream for what seems like forever. One of those things that's talked about, wished upon, but never really believed to ever come to fruition. Until now... maybe. Mayor Eric Adams has announced a public engagement process to accelerate the critical, long-term BQE planning effort. Today, Adams and the NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez opened up exploration for improving corridors along city-owned land between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street. (NYC.gov)

3. Queer|Art|Film returns to the IFC Center on Sept. 19 with a season curated by multidisciplinary artists Heather Lynn Johnson and Sarah Zapata. The hand-picked selection of films aims to elevate diverse creatives from New York's LGBTQ+ community. Exploring a variety of themes like body autonomy and self-discovery, the range of artists featured, and their stories is vast and inspiring. Learn more and score tickets at the link. (City Life Org)

4. Brooklyn's Established Gallery has received a free-of-charge booth for three editions, thanks to a fellowship granted by the Affordable Art Fair. Returning to the Chelsea Metropolitan Pavilion next week from Sept. 22-25, the Affordable Art Fair is celebrating a banner year after making its New York debut 10 years ago. The fair has expanded its goal of economic inclusivity to galleries with the recently introduced Fellowship Program, which will grant upstart organizations across the tristate area an opportunity to showcase work by their pools of artists. Brooklyn's Established Gallery, operated by co-owners Hally and Johnny Thornton, is this year's recipient, thanks to the duo's sustainable business model that seeks to elevate emerging local artists.
