Brooklyn Mosque Vandalized In Suspected Hate Crime, NYPD Seeks Suspect

NYPD searches for man who threw Quran pages and smeared feces on Brooklyn Heights mosque, investigating incident as hate crime.

BROOKLYN, NY— Police are searching for a man accused of vandalizing a mosque in Brooklyn Heights in an incident being investigated as a hate crime.

Authorities said the suspect, wearing a black skullcap and red sweatshirt and sweatpants, threw pages from the Quran onto the steps of the Islamic Mission of America at 143 State St. around 4:30 a.m. on March 9.

Police said the man returned and smeared feces on the mosque’s door before fleeing the scene. No one was injured.

The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating the incident as aggravated harassment.

According to the mosque’s website, also known as the Daoud Mosque, the facility was founded in the 1920s or early 1930s and has served the local community for decades.

The NYPD urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or submit tips online.
