Yesterday the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to designate 5 Gowanus Locations as New York City Landmarks.
Below are the addresses of the new landmarks:
- Somers Brothers Tinware Factory (later American Can Company) at 238-246 3rd Street.
- Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company Central Power Station Engine House at 153 Second Street.
- Montauk Paint Manufacturing Company Building at 170 Second Avenue.
- Gowanus Canal Flushing Tunnel Pumping Station and Gate House at 196 Butler Street.
- American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Rogers Memorial Building at 233 Butler Street.
Each location represents a different aspect of the great industrial history of Gowanus, and we at Brooklyn Community Board 6 are pleased with LPC’s decision.

As we noted in our resolution, we continue to urge LPC to look for other noteworthy locations for designation, and, from the start of the rezoning process, we continuously have urged DCP to include protections and enhancements for the Industrial Business Zone.
