Brooklyn author Hane Selmani has launched her official website and opened pre-orders for her debut memoir, A Country Called Brooklyn, releasing May 1, 2026.
The book reexamines the 1981 murder of her sister in Brooklyn — a case that exposed the intersection of heroin addiction, cultural honor codes, and silence within an immigrant community.
Drawing from court transcripts, interviews, and decades of investigation, Selmani reconstructs the hours leading up to the killing and examines how addiction, rumor, and patriarchal codes shaped the narrative.

Gallery Particulier Presents Unboxed: Black Fathers Are Present A New Exhibition by Visual Artist Dáreece J. Walker Opening May 1, 2026
Brooklyn, NY — Gallery Particulier is proud to announce the upcoming exhibition&nbsp; Unboxed: Black Fathers Are Here, featuring a powerful new body of work by acclaimed visual artist Dáreece J. Walker. The exhibition opens May 1 2026, and will be on view through June 30 at Gallery Particulier in Brooklyn, New York.
Unboxed: Black Fathers Are Present is a poignant celebration of Black fatherhood through intimate and evocative visual narratives. This series captures Black fathers with their children in everyday moments of affection, care, joy, and strength. These artworks challenge distorted portrayals of Black masculinity, and focus on stories of love, care, and presence.
Walker’s work blends mixed media techniques, including inkjet prints, charcoal drawing, and collage mounted onto cardboard and other materials often associated with masculinity and utilitarian labor. This approach gives both material and emotional weight to the subject matter. His use of cardboard not only references objects familiar in everyday life, but subtly symbolizes the dignity of ordinary Black lives and their familial bonds.
“This exhibition speaks directly to our mission,” says Justin Freeman, Executive Director of Gallery Particulier, a Black father himself. “We are committed to presenting work that reflects the lived experiences of our community with honesty and pride. Dáreece's portrayal of Black fathers is powerful because it puts love and presence, qualities that are too often overlooked in dominant narratives..”
About the Artist Dáreece J. Walker is a Brooklyn-based visual artist whose work investigates sociopolitical themes through figurative and narrative imagery. Trained with a B.F.A. and M.F.A., his practice has been featured in major publications and exhibitions, and his work is held in public and private collections. He creates images that not only respond to historical and cultural narratives but also assert a counter-narrative rooted in everyday Black life and joy.
Gallery Particulier’s Mission This exhibition aligns with Gallery Particulier’s mission to present work that is relevant to our communities.. Unboxed: Black Fathers Are Present invites viewers into everyday intimacy and reflection, creating new spaces for connection and visibility.

Brooklyn Conservatory of Music

The OMNI Ensemble is pleased to announce the conclusion of its 43rd season at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music on Saturday evening, May 2, 2026 at 8:00 pm. Music Director/Flutist David Wechsler will host an evening of woodwind quintet and piano music. Compositions are Karel Husa’s Serenade for woodwind quintet and piano, Valerie Coleman’s Afro Cuban Concerto for wind quintet, Chen Yi’s Woodwind Quintet, and David Wechsler’s Divertimento
for Wind Quintet and Piano. Assisting musicians are Elizabeth Kieronski - oboe, Jeffrey Adler - clarinet, Atsuko Sato – bassoon, Eric David - horn, and Sylvia Kahan, piano. 
Continuing as the chamber music group in residence at the Brooklyn Conservatory, The OMNI Ensemble will continue to perform concerts of enormous variety all designed to provide their audience with a musical diversity not ordinarily encountered by one chamber music group. Throughout the season they perform in the recital hall at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. 

Tickets at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music are $25.00, $15.00 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available in advance on the OMNI Ensemble website or at the door prior to the performance.

The OMNI Ensemble is a chamber music created to perform programs of enormous variety, with music ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century, including Western classical music, jazz, and electronic and improvised music, all designed to provide their audience with a musical experience not ordinarily encountered in a single music event. Since its inception in 1983 the group has featured many guest artists including multi instrumentalist/composer David Amram, performance artist John Kelley, Singer Erika Banks, Kumongo player Jin Hi Kim, Saxophonist Roy Nathanson, Mezzo Sopranos Catherine Ciesinski and Charlotte Hellekant, Harpsichordists Gerald Ranck and Rebecca Pechefsky, and keyboardist Marco Benevento. The group has commissioned works by David Lang, Lee Hyla, Allen Shearson, &amp; Michael Bushnell, and performed new pieces by Jim Lahti, Eric Klein, and David Wechsler.
