Brooklyn Heights Goes West on Sunday

Event Details

Montague Street, Montague St, NY, 11201

Hopalong Andrew kicks things off for the littles before katydids and caller Sammy Osmund turns the block into a full on street square dance

For one afternoon, Brooklyn Heights is trading brownstones for boots.

SADDLE UP: A MONTAGUE STREET HOEDOWN takes over Montague Street between Henry and Hicks Streets with cowboy tunes, fiddle music, square dancing in the middle of the street, and plenty of Western style.

The day starts with NYC cowboy favorite Hopalong Andrew, bringing cowboy songs, foot stomping singalongs and plenty of yee-haws for the littlest cowpokes and their grown ups.

Then Montague Street becomes the dance floor. katydids bring the fiddle, and Sammy Osmund, one of the south's favorite square dance callers, takes the mic to get everyone moving.

Never square danced? No problem. Sammy will teach you the moves as you go.

Come with a partner, find one when you get here, or jump in solo. Do-si-dos, promenades, swings and plenty of boots hitting pavement are all part of the plan.

And dress the part. Think denim, fringe, Western shirts, cowboy hats, boots, the works.

The hoedown is presented with Jalopy Theatre, Brooklyn’s longtime home for folk, roots and traditional music, bringing its musicians and unmistakable Americana spirit to the heart of Brooklyn Heights.

“Jalopy has been part of Brooklyn’s folk and traditional music community for 20 years, bringing people together around live music, dancing and traditions that are meant to be shared,” said Talia Keren-Zvi, Program Director & Development Officer at Jalopy Theatre and School of Music. “We’re so happy to bring that spirit to Montague Street and get people of all ages dancing together right in the middle of the block. It’s especially fun to be here just ahead of the Brooklyn Folk Festival, when we’ll be back in Brooklyn Heights for three days of music, dancing and community at St. Ann’s Church.

The day also gives visitors a chance to step off the dance floor and into the neighborhood’s history. At 1 PM and 3 PM, McNeil Tours will lead free walking tours through Brooklyn Heights, taking guests past landmark brownstones, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, historic sites and places connected to the American Revolution.
