Costumed dogs on parade, followed by a square dance in the middle of the street. That's how Brooklyn Heights is closing out its 2026 Montague Open Streets season this Sunday, October 25. All activities are free and open to the public.

Add soccer activities, wood carving, face painting and plenty for the kids, and the Montague BID and Brooklyn Heights Association are giving Brooklynites one more reason to spend Sunday on Montague Street before the season ends.

From noon to 5 PM, Montague Street between Clinton and Hicks Streets belongs to pedestrians, with free entertainment, shopping, outdoor dining and the kind of unexpected encounters that happen when the cars are gone.

First, the dogs.

With Halloween just around the corner, some of Brooklyn's best-dressed four-legged residents are getting their moment. The third annual Montague Diner Dog Costume Contest (12–2 PM) is calling on owners to bring their most inspired creations and compete for neighborhood bragging rights. Expect elaborate homemade costumes and some truly ridiculous canine characters. Registration opens at noon outside Montague Diner, 148 Montague Street, and spectators are encouraged to line the sidewalk and cheer on their favorites.

Then, grab a partner. Do-si-do.

The grand finale is a good old-fashioned square dance, right in the heart of Brooklyn Heights. From 2 to 4 PM, Jalopy Theatre presents a free, all ages square dance in collaboration with Montague Open Streets, featuring live music by katydids and caller Sammy Osmund, who will teach the moves as the band plays. No partner needed. No experience needed. No cowboy boots needed. Everyone isinvited to join in.

Plenty more to see and do:

  • Gotham FC: Soccer fans of all ages can jump into interactive games and score giveaways.
  • Free face painting, 12–2 PM: Artist Ciara Halligan creates colorful, Halloween-ready designs.
  • Soccer Stars, 1–4 PM: Young players can join games and skill building drills.
  • Live wood carving, 12–5 PM: Returning artist Dennis J. Taylor turns plain blocks of wood into animals, Santas, gnomes and more, entirely by hand. Watch him work outside the Brooklyn Women's Exchange, 137 Montague Street, and take home one of his one of a kind pieces.

Between events, explore the shops, restaurants, and businesses that make Montague Street worth the trip.

More Than a Street Closure

Presented by the Montague Street Business Improvement District (BID) in partnership with the Brooklyn Heights Association and the NYC Department of Transportation, Montague Open Streets has turned Sunday afternoons throughout the spring and fall into opportunities to play, shop, explore and connect with neighbors.

For local businesses, the program brings customers to their doorsteps and introduces new visitors to Montague Street. For residents and visitors, it's an opportunity to experience a familiar neighborhood street in a different way.

Sunday is he final Montague Open Streets of 2026, but Montague Street businesses are open year round.
