Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. A gun buy-back event in Bed-Stuy turned out to be a huge success. The event was held by the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, who reported that they had received at least 150 firearms by 4 p.m. on Saturday. Incentives are the thank for the big turnout: D.A. Eric Gonzalez and NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell announced that those who turn in operable guns and assault rifles would receive a $500 bank card for each firearm and $50 for each BB gun or imitation pistol. In addition, the first 25 attendees received an iPad. This gun buy-back event was the third of its kind this year.
2. A new Hanukkah musical based on Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' (yes, you read that right) is the work of a Brooklyn man. The first day of Hanukkah is today, and Harrison Bryan is celebrating with his own musical miracle. Set in modern-day Brooklyn, the musical tells the story of Chava, a narcissistic influencer who rejects her family and the holiday. "There's just so much Christmas entertainment out there, and as a Jew in New York City, we embrace that too. But my parents wanted me, and my sister, to grow up not thinking Hanukkah is a second-place holiday," says Bryan. Featuring a mostly Jewish cast, eight characters play 80 roles in the silly and irreverent production which includes a tradition started by Bryan's parents. Today is the first-ever presentation to the public, and you can support Bryan by going to the show!
3. Meanwhile, in a most unholy corner of Brooklyn, the Satanic Temple of New York City hosted a celebratory "unbaptism" yesterday. The temple's holiday event was at 3 Dollar Bill on Meserole Street in East Williamsburg. The show marked a holiday called "Sol Invictus" and included a Black Mass, a group unbaptism, and music from DJ Kamikaze Tomato. Sol Invictus is an official holiday of the Satanic Temple that celebrates the pursuit of knowledge and being unconquered by superstition. According to the group, their "Black Mass" is a celebration of blasphemy, which can be an expression of personal liberty and freedom and their "unbaptism" is a ritual in which participants renounce superstitions that may have been imposed upon them without their consent as a child. The temple is a federally recognized religious organization. Participation at the event was optional, but the organization invited the public to join in on the holiday if they found the concepts personally meaningful.
