Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. Today are the midterm elections — pivotal across the country — and a whopping 432,634 New Yorkers have already cast their vote during nine days of early voting in the city. Brooklyn headed that count: With more than 135,000 early voters, Brooklyn voters made up the largest pool in New York City early voting. And while these numbers are impressive, they only account for 9 percent of registered voters in New York City. Voter turnout is always higher in presidential election years, even when Senate and Congressional races are extremely contentious — like the race for governor between incumbent Kathy Hochul and challenger Lee Zeldin. The links below offer helpful resources for New York City voters, including polling site locations and hours, voter rights recognized in New York State, voter hotlines, and additional election information. And in other news....
2. Crown Heights' newest Classon Avenue cafe has delicious coffee, sweet pastries, and an even sweeter origin story. Owner Terrie Mangrum, 55, opened Polly's Cafe in late September, but she's had her eye on the location for over a decade. 766 Classon Ave. used to be home to the Glass Shop, a local go-to and hangout spot where Mangrum frequented and met her wife (then a Glass Shop barista). Years later, Mangrum pass by the empty 600 square-foot space and dream of making it something similar to what it once was. So, in more ways than one, Polly's Cafe at 766 Classon Ave. is a dream come true. Next time you're in the area, pop in for some La Colombe coffee, a Balthazar pastry, and maybe even a meet-cute with 'the one.'
3. A TikToker is making recipes she finds on gravestones — some might say they're to die for. Digital librarian Rosie Grant picked up her unique hobby during an internship at the Congressional Cemetery. Under the handle @GhostlyArchive on TikTok, Rosie posts videos of gravestone recipes she's found and tried, letting her followers know if these dying words have withstood the test (and taste) of time. One of Rosie's re-creations went viral in January, sparking a niche hobby for the librarian. Pictured at the link is Rosie with Naomi Miller Dawson's spritz cookie recipe at her gravestone in Brooklyn.
4. Bay Ridge sees landmarking of Doctors' Row in honor of medical professionals who used to practice out of their basements along the historic rowhouse strip. Situated on Bay Ridge Parkway between Fourth and Fifth avenues, a stretch of relatively well-preserved rowhouses built between 1906 and 1913 (most by a single architect!), gives the block a classic "boulevard feeling." At the time of their construction, these limestone homes were largely purchased by medical doctors who would run private practices out of their basements. Signage officially went up on Oct. 28, designating Doctors' Row as Bay Ridge's first historical landmark.
5. Co-owner of the Brooklyn Nets, Clara Wu Tsai, just launched a program for minority-led startups. Yesterday, BK-XL became the largest business accelerator for minority founders of early-stage startups, pledging to invest up to $500,000 to 12 startups led by Black, indigenous, and other minority founders in 2023. "Capital is one of the biggest impediments to wealth-building, particularly for BIPOC entrepreneurs," Wu Tsai told The Associated Press in an interview. "We thought that investing in this segment was how we could create wealth, not only for the entrepreneurs, but also through all the different jobs that they are going to create." A mix of grants, loans, and investments into minority-lead businesses in Brooklyn is inspired by a larger commitment to strengthening individuals and communities in the borough.
