1. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is using funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to restore the Jamaica Bay estuary. Engineer JoAnne Castagna can remember a time when she had to cover her nose when driving along the Belt Parkway thanks to a 100-foot mound of garbage marring the estuary. And while the smell is gone, so many years of poor upkeep have caused serious environmental degradation to the area. The Army Corps and partnering agencies are using the federal funds allotted by the Biden administration to revitalize marsh islands in the bay, part of a larger initiative to restore the New York-New Jersey estuary. Funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will also be used by the Army Corps on over 500 projects throughout the United States.

DVIDS

2. Adding to the tally of 2022's subway attacks, a young woman was burned by an unknown chemical in a Brooklyn subway station early yesterday. The 21-year-old victim was standing on a southbound platform at the Winthrop Street station on the No. 2 and 5 lines when a woman began a verbal dispute with her, the police said. The attacker followed her up an internal flight of stairs and splashed a chemical substance into the victim's face before fleeing. Suffering burns on the left side of her face, the victim was rushed to a specialized burn unit at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx where she is now in critical but stable condition. Police have released photos and a video of the suspect yesterday: The woman, who appears to be in her 20s, was last seen wearing a black jacket with a fur-lined hood, as well as black pants covered in white drawings, according to the police.

"Jummy’s Picks by Black-Owned Brooklyn is transforming the massive retail space at Atlantic Center into a multi-weekend holiday pop-up market." The boutique experience will take place from Dec. 10-11 and Dec. 17-18 and features Black-Owned Brooklyn's curated array of local retailers for this bespoke shopping experience. The attractions will be many, with vendors selling everything from apparel, home and design, wellness and beauty, kids' clothing, tons of food, and even live DJ sets from Donwill, DJ Tara, Run P. and DJ Blue Monday, and family-friendly appearances by “Papa and Mama Soul Santa."

4. Brooklyn's in the House, and Brooklyn Bar Association is excited about it. This week, Brooklynite and U.S. Representative Hakeem Jeffries was elected House Majority Leader and Brooklyn Bar Association (BBA) gave a statement congratulating the congressman. Jeffries was raised in Crown Heights, attended NYC public schools, and graduated magna cum laude from NYU Law School. On Wednesday, he became the first African American to lead a Congressional party. These accolades and many others were featured in BBA's proud and boastful congratulatory address to Jeffries.
