Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:

1. A man was stabbed to death during a fight outside his favorite bar in Crown Heights. 35-year-old Kerwin Cox was spending Saturday with friends at the bar on Franklin Ave. near Lincoln Place when a brawl broke out and spilled outside. Cox is mourned by those who knew him, including his longtime girlfriend who described Cox as a non-confrontational, loving father, and "positive soul." Just 25 minutes before he was killed, Cox texted his girlfriend that he would be on his way home shortly.

2. Brooklyn resident was joined by friends in a trek to the top of Everest to raise funds for blood cancer. In 2018, Stan Wagner, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2013 and resides in Brooklyn, joined by two friends and a group of 15 others, submitted Mount Everest for a cure (participating in Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma®, a joint initiative between the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation and CURE Media Groupwith). Four years after the daunting journey, Wagner, Marcus, and Usmani reflected during a recent CURE® Educated Patient® Summit on multiple myeloma. You can read more about their journey, and the many lives that changed because of it, at the link.

3. A new sensory gym opened in Crown Heights by the Brooklyn Kindergarten Society. Local officials joined BKS late last month to unveil their new project, a sensory gym located in central Brooklyn aimed to help specifically help children with learning differences and developmental delays. Situated within the Weeksville Gardens Children’s Center, the gym offers a new, therapeutic approach to provide children with occupational, physical, and speech therapies, especially those living in New York City Housing Authority developments or in under-resourced communities.

4. CBS spotlighted the first Latina CEO of children's entertainment company in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Encantos was founded by Brooklyn entrepreneur Susie Jaramillo, an author, artist, and now CEO of her own children's entertainment company. Jaramillo fancies herself a unicorn, someone who can do it all. The idea for Encantos came about when she realized there was a gap in the children's education market — one of her many ventures with an eye to leveling the playing field and cultural access for children from diverse backgrounds.

5. Gardel's Greene Garden is saying goodbye after more than 20 years. Gardel Prudent, owner of a nursery in Fort Greene at 97 South Portland Ave., will be closing Greene Garden come July — to be replaced by a six-story apartment building. Since its opening in 1994, the nursery, run by Gardel and his wife, has become a fixture in the community for local gardeners. Gardel had hoped to develop a mixed-use residential building with space for the nursery on the ground floor but said his lender would only approve a solely residential development.

A creative talent through and through, he attended the International Film School in Paris and went on to create several feature documentaries.
