1. A body was found the freezer of a Brooklyn bakery. Early yesterday, a 33-year-old man was found dead in the freezer at the Brooklyn shop where he worked, authorities said. Around 9 a.m., a coworker found the man's body in the walk-in freezer at Beigel's Bakery on Avenue D in East Flatbush. While there were no immediate signs of trauma to the victim's body, investigation continues and an autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of death.
2. Brooklyn police officer's body was found in Guyana, according to the NYPD. Prospect Lefferts Gardens Officer Gladstone Haynes, who served 18 years, died on vacation this week. On Sunday, Haynes disappeared while swimming near Orinduik Falls. His family had hoped he would turn up alive, but his body was found on Wednesday. Haynes was originally from Guyana where his father's police service inspired his own nearly 20-year career, most of which was spent with the 70th Precinct in Flatbush. Haynes was a father of five and our thoughts go out to his family during this tragic time.
3. A brownstone row on Linden Street in Bushwick is about to be landmarked. This section of Linden Street, between Broadway and Bushwick Avenue, was voted on by the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) to become an official historic site. The area, signposted by a group of 32 brick and brownstone row houses built between 1885 and 1901 by a variety of Brooklyn-based architects, has been left virtually intact for decades. According to the committee, the earliest residents were mostly middle and working-class families who flocked naturally to this area (as folks still do) for its proximity to transportation. LPC will host a public hearing on the matter in the near future and shortly after will call a vote.
4. NYC's smallest crime rate increase to date this year could signal a turning point. During October, the city saw only a 5.9 percent rise in crime, the lowest jump-up in major felony cases that 2022 has seen. Every other month this year has seen spikes of double-digit percentage points. And while that 5.9 percent does mean that felony rates continue to rise city-wide, there was actually a 32.6 percent decrease in murder cases in October. "NYPD credits the decrease in gun violence to the department’s ongoing work to deploy officers into neighborhoods, public housing areas, and transit stations that need them most," according to AM New York.
5. Brooklyn, know your rights before you hit the polls. First and foremost, voting is a safe and protected practice in New York State; that means it is illegal for anyone to intimidate, threaten, or coerce you in an effort to interfere with your right to vote. Some early voters in Crown Heights have already made complaints about harassment at the polls. Attorney General Leticia James reminds all New Yorkers that the following actions are prohibited under state law:
- Requiring photo ID to vote
- State and local employee election interference
- Open carry of firearms (load or unloaded) and/or other dangerous instruments to intimidate or harass
- U.S. armed forces personnel preventing, intimidating, threatening, etc. an individual's right to vote
- Groups organizing as private militias without state permission
- Invading the privacy of a voting booth used by a voter
Learn more about your protected right to vote at the link, and do not hesitate to contact the Attorney General's Election Protection Hotline if you experience or witness any of the above actions, behavior causing long lines, or creating false fears that people may be voting illegally or that voting may have negative consequences.

🐝 Brooklyn Buzz:
- Brooklyn's 'most interesting' new restaurant: Syko of Park Slope is short for 'Syrian' and 'Korean.' "This is not a Syrian-Korean fusion restaurant, mind you, but more like a Syrian-Korean KFC–Taco Bell with each discrete concept represented on its own, down to the customer-facing kitchen counter with mise en place split through the middle according to cuisine. Banchan on the left, grape leaves on the right." (Grub Street)
