Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

1. The General Election is on Tuesday, Nov. 8 — here's everything Brooklyn voters need to know before then:

  • This is the first election cycle since new congressional districts were drawn. New York Democrats had hoped to use the map to their favor, however a Republican lawsuit resulted in a more neutral final iteration.
  • In heavily Democratic areas, like Brooklyn, many incumbents will coast smoothly into their next term. But some longtime politicos are facing serious competition from challengers from the opposing party.
  • Voters in Brooklyn and throughout the city can participate in early voting, which kicks off today, Oct. 29, and runs through Nov. 6. Here is the schedule for early polling sites:
    • Saturday, Oct. 29: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. | Sunday, Oct. 30: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. | Monday, Oct. 31: 7 a.m.-3 p.m. | Tuesday, Nov. 1: 10 a.m.-8 p.m. | Wednesday, Nov. 2: 10 a.m.-8 p.m. | Thursday, Nov. 3: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. | Friday, Nov. 4: 7 a.m.-3 p.m. | Saturday, Nov. 5: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. | Sunday, Nov. 6: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

2. NYPD is looking for 11 people after a Jewish boy was pelted with eggs on a Brooklyn street. Police released surveillance footage yesterday of a group fleeing the harassment scene, with clear images of four, who the Hate Crime Task Force are actively investigating. Dressed in traditional Jewish garb, a 15-year-old boy was approached just after 1 p.m. on Monday at E. 18th Street and Bay Avenue in Midwood. The group of attackers allegedly made a series of antisemitic remarks and shouted, "Free Palestine!" before throwing multiple eggs at him.

3. The average home prices in Brooklyn's Fiske Terrace were nearly cut in half — one of the city's greatest home price drops. NYC boasts some of the highest real estate prices in the country, but one of Brooklyn's priciest neighborhoods has seen a dramatic drop. Nestled right below Prospect Park, Fiske Terrace is a little-known corner of Brooklyn — even to longtime residents of the borough — and yet has consistently remained one of the priciest areas. However, the neighborhood recently sank in median price from $1.65 million to $905,000, bringing it from No. 9 to No. 45 on New York's "Top 50 Most Expensive Neighborhoods" list. Also interesting is Gowanus, the neighborhood on the infamous canal, who's average home price has experienced a 65 percent spike in sale price from $1.088 million last year to $1.791 million this year.

4. Park advocates and trans activists are demanding more for the newly named Marsha P. Johnson Park. Formerly East River State Park, the Williamsburg oasis was renamed in August 2020 for the late Black trans LGBTQ+ civil rights activist Marsha P. Johnson. A few changes were made here and there, but members of the trans community aren't satisfied with the 'redesign' — one that feels too similar to the park's previous iteration. Folks have gone back and forth with design plans for the space. One idea, termed the Plastic Park by those who vetoed, was nixed because of its synthetic floral installation proposition; community members hoped to honor Johnson's love for flowers and colors with real landscape features, they said. Most recently, Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects and Planners have been brought on to head the design process and are hearing from a large number of trans voices and park activists on their visions for the park.
