🌱 Grocery Store Shooting + Upgrades For Delivery Drivers + More Rain

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

(Patch Media)

Hello, neighbors! It's Tuesday in Brooklyn and I'm back in your inbox to get you caught up on all the most important things happening in town, including updates on:

  • Aide plan for delivery drivers
  • Brooklyn Democrat questioning Twitter censor
  • Techy art activism

But first, today's weather. More storm stuff:

🌧 Occasional rain and drizzle. High: 55 Low: 53.

Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

1. A man and woman were shot in a Canarsie grocery store. After an argument between the gunman and cashier the shooter shot four times with a .380-caliber handgun, hitting the 23-year-old worker in the left ankle and a 22-year-old female customer in the abdomen. The customer's father said his daughter, a student looking to complete her masters, was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Both victims are in stable condition. The gunman arrived and fled in an SUV which was later found abandoned on a dead-end street just a few blocks down from the store; the man is still at large.

2. Food delivery workers in NYC will soon have recharging stations for their electric bike batteries, cellphones, and themselves. A city plan was announced yesterday to turn abandoned newsstands and other unused structures into facilities for delivery drivers. Seemingly overnight, COVID-19 changed the way — and the frequency — we order take-in, both in NYC and nationwide. As demand surged for deliveries, so too did activism lead by the mostly immigrant NYC workers who formed an advocacy group called Los Deliveristas Unidos. LDU held rallies, protesting a variety of dangerous and indignities associated with their high-demand jobs — like not being allowed to use the restaurant restrooms at pick-up locations.

3. Democratic congressional candidate Max Rose faces Twitter's chopping block: censorship. Twitter censored an advertisement Rose shared that criticized his Republican opponent Nicole Malliotakis' record on abortion and reproductive health. The blue bird app dampened the commercial with sensitive content age restrictions that Rose deemed "outrageous." After Rose filed an appeal, Twitter removed the restrictions. The social media giant did not, however, respond to inquiries as to why the ad was censored, or how it fell in violation of the platform's community guidelines.

4. Antiquated emergency call boxes have new use in Downtown Brooklyn. "Witnessing," an art installation in Downtown Brooklyn, uses future-forward media to honor victims of police brutality. "Six 7-f00t-tall call boxes, outfitted with screens, and placed around the Plaza at 300 Ashland, broadcast video testimonies from victims and survivors of police violence." Bradley McCallum originally created the project over 20 years ago and has decided to revisit in response to contemporary violence by police forces nationwide. Mixing old structures with new tech, "Witnessing" brings a gruesome history into the modern-day, a time during which that same violent story still plagues our country.

  • ♻️ Phil Decicco of the Brooklyn Paper thinks facts should be dictating NYC energy policy: "Over four sessions, we heard from members of the community and advocates who expressed strong support for renewable alternatives and understandable concern for their rising energy bills. We also heard a lot of misinformation about National Grid and our motives for pursuing this project." Read more about his study, thoughts, and findings at the link. (Brooklyn Paper)
