🌱 Groper At Large + Bettering Bus Frequency + The Jacob Dangler House

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

(Patch Media)

Hello, friends! It's me, Carlie Houser, your host of the Daily. Let's get this Monday started off right with a quick dive into everything you need to know about what's happening in town,

In other news:

  • A campaign for better public transport
  • Historic Bed-Stuy building falls to developers
  • Opinions on the housing crisis

But first, today's weather:

🌤 Partly sunny and breezy. High: 75 Low: 59.

Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

1. A surprise fondler is making his rounds in Brooklyn, police say. In past weeks, a man riding a moped has forcibly grabbed the genitals and buttocks of at least seven pedestrian women in the Williamsburg, Park Slope, and Clinton Hill areas. The victims have ranged in age from 20 to 48 years old. Police released security camera video Sunday showing the at-large suspect looking over his shoulder while riding a moped down a sidewalk after the most recent reported incident.

2. Riders Alliance campaigns for more frequent buses and trains as transportation aid from the government dwindles after the pandemic. The Brooklyn grassroots organization gathered on Sunday for a rally, urging Gov. Kathy Hochul to increase financial support to the NYC transit system. After ridership dropped by almost 90 percent from March to April 2020, subway use has not returned to normal since the onset of the pandemic—that means much less money for the MTA (a bad fiscal situation exacerbated by the COVID-19 MTA budget gap). Campaigning members of NY's Riders Alliance are asking the state to close the COVID-19 MTA budget gap and increase bus and subway frequency to six minutes or less throughout the day.

3. A beloved community mansion at 441 Willoughby is gone, and Bed-Stuy residents ask 'Why?' The Jacob Dangler House, long been used as a meeting space, a community center, and a place for baby showers, weddings and funeral repasts, has turned to rubble despite protests to the developer who bought the property. Because of a technological glitch, the Landmarks Preservation Commission was not flagged about the permit in time to consider designating the mansion as historic. Now, the fight for the character of Bed-Stuy has taken another tragic hit.

4. An attorney is looking at the state of bail reform in Brooklyn. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez has been a longtime supporter of folks caught on the wrong side of the law who are trying to turn their lives around. As part of his effort, he's been trying to liberalize bail laws in the city for some time now. At the link, listen to CBS2's Marcia Kramer in conversation with Gonzalez about how things stand now and what he plans to do next.

5. Could a housing solution really be right under our noses? David K. Brawley and Getulio Cruz from the New York Daily News are fed up with the "conventional wisdom" saturating discussions about the housing crisis—the wisdom being that the only way to introduce more affordable housing in the city is by increasing building density. Yup, just build more buildings. But what about unused buildings that already exist? Herein could lie a possible solution, argue Brawley and Getulio. Citing the hundreds of unused parcels and vacant buildings owned by religious institutions that have dwindled in size or even closed, these journalist are looking for a possible housing solution hiding in plain sight.
