Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. Not only is Brooklyn in the House, but the borough's very own Hakeem Jeffries is poised to make history as the first Black lawmaker to lead a party in Congress. As the 118th Congress convenes in Washington, New York Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D) is expected to make history as leader of the Democratic minority, as the prolonged floor fight for House speaker comes to a close. Jeffries would succeed Nancy Pelosi, who served as speaker in the prior session of Congress when Democrats were in the majority. The Crown Heights-born representative would be making history in more ways that one: Not only would he be the first Black lawmaker to lead party in Congress, he would also be the first person voted to lead House Democrats to be born after the end of World War II.
2. NYPD has just released footage of a suspected gunman who fired at a man in Brooklyn last month. At approximately 2:35 p.m., on Sunday, Dec. 4, two suspects discharged a firearm multiple times towards a man standing opposite of 300 Georgia Ave. in Brownsville and fled on foot northbound on Georgia Avenue to parts unknown. No injuries or property damage was reported. NYPD announced that one of the suspects has been apprehended, and released surveillance footage of the man in question. The suspect was last scene wearing a red hoodie sweater under a black bubble jacket, red sweatpants and white sneakers. Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
3. A Williamsburg artist takes inspiration from Brooklyn's scattered water towers, making the grandiose structures into miniature, sustainably made statues. Nina Boesch is a New Yorker by way of Germany, and her mini odes to the borough's water supply structures each stand at about five inches tall. Nina makes sure that all of her art is made with up-cycled goods, in order to stay true to the life-giving source that inspires her work. Her machine-made and hand-crafted miniatures were recently on sale at Greenpoint's Holiday Market, but those who missed out on these gems can still fall in love with them on the artist's colorful Instagram and learn more about them and Nina's other work in her interview with Greenpointers, linked below.
