Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:

1. A double shooting in Brooklyn brought a Halloween party to a deadly end. Police responded to reports of gunfire at a commercial building on Atlantic Avenue in Crown Heights around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. A 28-year-old man was found dead after being shot in the back, according to authorities, and a second victim, a 51-year-old woman, was shot in the arm and rushed to Kings County Hospital. Investigators don't believe the victims were at the party together and are still unsure who the gunman was targeting.

2. 70 years after her death, Frida Kahlo continues to fascinate the modern audience. Today, the Mexican artist's work has become larger than itself—now the subject of an upcoming Broadway musical, exhibits upon exhibits chronicling the artist's life, and even the alleged burning of an estimated $10 million Frida Kahlo drawings as part of an NFT launch, which has sparked a criminal investigation by Mexican authorities. Recently, a Brooklyn museum has curated in immersive Frida Kahlo experience and exhibit: "Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon," which opened Friday at the Immersive Pavilion. The 90-minute visual tour takes visitors through seven interactive rooms, all bursting at the seams with 360 projects of Kahlo's life and art.

3. Richard Rabinowitz new book is a moving memoir of Jewish Brooklyn. In "Objects of Love and Regret: A Brooklyn Story" Rabinowitz pieces together his parents' story, a story inspired by day-to-day family objects that ignite his memory. Common tchotchkes themselves—a bottle opener, a hot plate, a cigar box—tell the story of a lower middle-class Jewish family, moving to, then around, and eventually out of Brooklyn. "I'm interested in the objects of everyday life because they help me understand the actions in the family, the relationships of people in the family," Rabinowitz says, "There is a kind of tremendous richness in ordinary people's lives. . .That's my animating principle."

Patch deal of the day:

Good knives make all the difference in the kitchen, but you don't need to overpay for them. Seido Japanese knives are made with strong high-carbon stainless steel (high-carbon knives are more durable and usually more expensive) and have an acute 15-degree angle for a noticeably sharper cutting face (most Western-style knives have edge angles of 25 degrees). For a limited time, Patch readers can get a 5-piece Seido Japanese master knife set for 71 percent off. At just under $70, this chef-quality set is perfect for any home cook and would also make a great gift for the holidays.
