Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. Children fleeing Ukraine were welcomed this year by a Brooklyn Hebrew charter school. At the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, The Hebrew Language Academy in Brooklyn accepted more than 60 Ukrainian students. At the end of last school year, Valerie Khaytina, chief external officer at Hebrew Public, started the initiative. Khaytina is herself Ukranian, with ties to a family fleeing the warn-torn country. The transition has not been easy, as refugee children have had to adjust to not one, but two, new languages (English and Hebrew) as well as grappling with the realities of what's happening to their home country.

2. David Byrne, Maria Cornejo, and other industry insiders celebrated the latest art "drop" by GBA at the Ace Hotel in Downtown Brooklyn. GBA is a new art, commerce, and lifestyle platform aimed to elevate the work of underrepresented communities of artists. The collective's latest exhibit opened last week inside the Ace's concrete and wood lobby, celebrating the work of Lakea Shepard and the artist's 'Slave Masks' exhibit. The pieces are based on "slave masks" or "devices of control and punishment used on enslaved people in the New World," and made with beads, gems, thread, and ephemera. Shepard uses traditional African basketmaking, embroidery, and embellishment techniques to portray the challenges facing Black people in contemporary society. The masks are on display through Jan. 30.

Teksupport is one of NYC's leading underground promoters and just announced a partnership with the borough's newest immersive venue ArtsDistrict. The duo is bringing "mind-bending" 360-degree projections to accompany a series of the world's leading DJs. ArtsDistrict, opened just recently in August 2022, is a 25,000-square-foot events space on the East River. According to Thrillist, ArtsDistrict boasts of "transporting" visitors into the sensory realm with a state-of-the-art projection system, revolving stage, industrial design, and a massive indoor-outdoor with incredible Manhattan skyline views.
