Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. Helicopters and noise pollution were on the City Council agenda yesterday after Thanksgiving in Brooklyn was "destroyed by the feckless, greedy tourist helicopter industry." Residents of some of the borough's most highly coveted waterfront neighborhoods, like DUMBO, Cobble Hill, and Brooklyn Heights, have been complaining of helicopter noise for decades. The Brooklyn Heights Association (BHA) has endorsed a bill that would eliminate nonessential helicopter trips in the NYC airspace. Nonprofit Stop the Chop is the main advocacy group fighting non-essential helicopter traffic — they have also endorsed the new bill. And for the time being, since the city's 311 hotline won't collect helicopter noise complaints, a new iPhone app called "Right Avenues: NYU Live Noise" was created to collect and aggregate noise complaints.
2. Kingsborough Community College (KCC) is offering cannabis education to New Yorkers as the state quickly becomes one of the nation's largest cannabis markets. The cannabis industry is a rich seedbed for new employment opportunities, and a Brooklyn city college has partnered with Green Flower in order to educate, train, and ultimately develop a skilled workforce to meet the rising tides of demand in New York State and across the nation. KCC is offering three online certification programs including advanced dispensary associate, advanced cultivation technician, and advanced manufacturing agent. Each course will cost $800, with a limited time special of $50 off using promo code FIRST30 starting today and valid through Dec. 30. Enrollment is currently underway for the training, which begins today. No experience is necessary to enroll in the courses.
3. Professional yo-yo slingers and swingers will descend on Coney Island come Dec. 10 for NYYYC, aka the annual New York Yo-Yo Contest. World-class yo-yo stars are coming to 1208 Surf Ave. this winter to show off their modern talents in a competition that's judged much like figure skating or gymnastics: "Timed routines choreographed to music are evaluated by a panel of judges who consider criteria such as complexity, creativity and trick execution," reads the event announcement. If you been associated with the yo-yo scene since your playground days, visit the link to get better acquainted with the sorts of awe-inspiring skills that yo-yo pros are managing these days.
