Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. A Brooklyn father is dead and his two daughters suffering stab wounds after a home invasion yesterday morning. Two men broke into the Bensonhurst house on 17th Avenue near 82nd Street just before 6 a.m demanding property from the family, police said. The New York Post reported that the thieves were after a safe, although police said there was no safe in the house. The father, 61-year-old Carlo Secondino, was pronounced dead at the scene after being repeatedly stabbed. One of his daughters, 19, was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center in critical condition, and his other daughter, 23, suffered knife wounds to her hands and was brought to NYU Langone-Brooklyn in stable condition, officials stated. The men fled to unknown locations and as of yesterday afternoon no arrests have been made.
2. Borough President Antonio Reynoso went back to the day care center he used to attend in Williamsburg, this time bringing holiday gifts for the kids. Just before Christmas, the 75 children at Nuestros Niños Child Development Center in Williamsburg got a special surprise from BP Reynoso, who arrived with holiday gifts for all. "Nuestros Niños gave me and my family so much when I was a kid, so my first holiday season as Borough President seemed like the perfect time to return the love," the beep said in a statement. Reynoso partnered with local organizations to make his gift-giving rounds possible all month.
3. January is National Blood Donor Month in Brooklyn, and it's a sure-fire way to kickstart your New Years resolutions by giving back. New York Blood Center is encouraging all those eligible to sign up to donate blood at a donor event on January 14. Folks can make their appointments via the link below (or by texting 732-616-8736) to give blood at St. Columba Church on Saturday, January 14th between 8am-2pm. And while appointments are encouraged, walk-ins are also welcome. Help spread the word!
