Howard Golden, Former Brooklyn Borough President, Dies At 98

Brooklyn's "champion of the people" served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, before becoming borough president and Brooklyn Dems chair.

BROOKLYN, NY — Former Brooklyn Borough President and community leader Howard Golden has died at the age of 98, according to family members and his obituary.

Golden, who was born in Flatbush to Jewish immigrants, died on Wednesday according to an obituary posted online. A graveside service will be Friday, Jan. 26 at Mount Hebron Cemetery in Flushing.

The Kings County Democratic County Committee expressed their sorrow on Thursday morning in a social media post, saying, "We will remember Golden as the champion of the people of Brooklyn while his legacy is felt for generations to come."

In a longer remembrance, the party outlined Golden's long career in public service: As the Brooklyn Democratic Party chair from 1984-1990, and as borough president for almost 25 years.

"The lifelong public servant's astute leadership transformed Brooklyn into the borough we know today by promoting its economic revival and significant revitalization," said the Brooklyn Democratic Party.

New York Attorney General Letitia James said Golden "dedicated himself to making Brooklyn the best borough it could be, and his legacy will never be forgotten."
