🌱 Hypothermic Chickens + Train Fare Dodger Wanted For Murder

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

(Patch Media)

Hey, Brooklyn. I'm here in your inbox today to tell you everything you need to know about what's going on in town.

But first, today's weather:

🌤 Sunny to partly cloudy. High: 68 Low: 51.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Brooklyn who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Brooklyn Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:

1. Train fare dodger arrested for outstanding murder warrant. A 17-year-old was busted for dodging train fear and ended up arrested for wanted murder. The arrest unfolded Friday evening around 6 p.m. without incident at the Grant Avenue subway station in Brooklyn when Xavier Lowe dodged the fare, police said. The teen was observed by subway police monitors as he circumvented pay; they stopped him and ran a records search.

2. This weekend was not a good time to be a chicken in Brooklyn. This week, thousands of chickens awaited their fate as members of the ritual animal slaughter for the Yom Kippur holiday, the Jewish atonement. Stacked outside tin crates by the thousands, the ill-fated chickens died of hypothermia over the course of two days during Kaporos. After being delivered to Hasidic neighborhoods in Williamsburg, Borough Park, Crown Heights and Midwood, hundreds of crates filled with chickens were left outside in the rain, soaking tens of thousands of chickens who were being stored without shelter on public streets.

Their Turn

3. A Brooklyn couple claims they were falsely accused of anti-Semitic remarks, and wrongly beaten for it. Paulo and Clelia Pinho filed a lawsuit during the pandemic that claims that members of the Hasidic Safety Patrol (a group of civilians) beat them up and broke Clelia's arm on account of a misheard remark about not wearing masks during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, members of the Hasidic community had been protesting mask mandates set by then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo and then-Mayor Bill de Blasio. The Pinhos received a host of threats before their case was dismissed more than a year later. The case mirrors that of Taj Patterson, who was beaten and partially blinded in a 2013 encounter in Brooklyn with the Shomrim. A judge on Sept. 19 awarded Patterson $4.5 million.
