(Patch Media)

Good morning, everybody! I'm back with your new copy of the Brooklyn Patch newsletter. Come along to find out the most important things happening around town. In today's briefing, you'll find these stories and more:

But first, today's weather:

🌤 Partly sunny and breezy. High: 52 Low: 30.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Brooklyn who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our readers to local businesses they need to know. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:

1. The saga has ended: on Sunday, the Brooklyn Nets traded Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks. The trade announcement comes just two days after reports that Irving was looking for a new address — his last year in Brooklyn has been anything but uneventful. Irving kicked off the season enmeshed in controversy after a handful of antisemitic social media posts earned him a lengthy suspension and anti-hate education. Also in the summer, the Nets refused to extend the star point guard's contract. Thursday will an end to Irving's tumultuous four-season tenure in Brooklyn, and Nets will receive power forward Dorian Finney-Smith, former Net guard Spencer Dinwiddie, a 2029 first-round pick and two second-round picks.

2. New York asked and MTA responded, on topics like the Brooklyn bus redesign, art commissions, and more. Since mid-January, MTA has been hosting a series of community meetings to answer questions and receive feedback from commuters about its plans to merge two bus routes in Bed-Stuy — many argue that the changes are unnecessary and would cause a dangerous transit desert in an area where the elderly and young children rely on buses. One Flatbush resident was eager to know when the next community engagement workshop will be held. MTA let Brooklyn known that "There's a virtual workshop for Community Districts 14 and 17 — which include your neighborhood, Flatbush — set for Thursday, Feb. 23 and Tuesday, Mar. 7 respectively. If you can't make those, you can see the full schedule and register to join any of our meetings on the MTA website." On a different note, a Ridgewood resident wondered how the MTA fills the city's subway stations with art. A it turns out, MTA has been commissioning and taking submissions for subway beautification since 1985 and has commissioned more than 350 permanent artworks through its process.

AMNY

3. Over the weekend, a massive Brooklyn apartment building lost power on the coldest day of the year. On Saturday morning, residents of Brooklyn's Spring Creek Towers had to deal with power outages throughout the building with outside temperatures feeling well below zero. During the night, residents said the power went out a first time around 3 a.m.; while firefighters arrived urgently and seemed to have fixed the issue, the problem recurred just before 9 a.m. come morning. The issue was fixed again, and residents crossed their fingers that they'd have heat through the day. New York City has been under a Code Blue warning due to extremely cold temperatures, and even MTA released a warning to commuters that subways could be delayed due to the chill.
