🌱 Iwen Chu For NY Senate + Helping Ukrainians + Thierry Mugler

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, everybody. It's me, Carlie Houser, your host of the Brooklyn Daily — here to explain everything that's fit to print about what's happening in town. In today's Daily, we have these stories and more:

  • Brooklyn district elects its first Asian woman to N.Y. Senate
  • Feds grant millions to NYC's refugee assistance effort
  • Things for your Friday

But first, today's weather:

🌤 Windy with clouds and sun. High: 45 Low: 31.

Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

1. Iwen Chu just became first the Asian woman elected to New York Senate, declaring victory yesterday in tight Brooklyn race. "We won!" Chu tweeted on Wednesday, a full week after Election Day. "I promise every day to fight for a better New York — safer, cleaner, and more affordable for our families, and to be a voice for all our communities." Chu will represent the newly crafted 17th Senate District which covers parts of Sunset Park, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Bay Ridge, Kensington and Dyker Heights. Chu, formerly chief of staff for Assemblyman Peter Abbate, drew support from progressives and mainline Democrats, but did face tough contact from Republicans who made gains across Southern Brooklyn.

2. Brooklyn-based nonprofit CAMBA has received $3.3 million to boost its refugee assistance program and aide displaced Ukrainians. CAMBA operated out of multiple locations around the city, helping New Yorkers get their footing, stabilize their lives, and become self-sufficient through language and skills training. New York is home to the largest Ukranian population in the United States, and organizations like CAMBA work around the clock in their assistance efforts. Gov. Kathy Hochul is also committed to helping refugees, especially Ukrainians during this unprecedented moment in history, and believes that federal funding is crucial to the success and efficacy of the city's assistance effort.

3. A star-studded bunch showed out for Brooklynn Museum's gala to celebrate the new Thierry Mugler exhibit. Among the gala-goers were Kylie Jenner, who came dressed in an archival cocoon cape and dragonfly-printed bodysuit, paying homage to the late French designer and his revolutionary artistry. Jenner was guided by Mugler's newest creative director Casey Cadwallader— the pair donned Mugler's futuristic designs, channeling new-wave superwoman. The gala's other attendees were equally eye-catching, Laverne Cox and Amanda Lepore among them.
