Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

1. NYPD officers shot at a man who allegedly approached them, machete in hand. Yesterday afternoon, just after 4 p.m. on New Lots Avenue between Snediker Avenue and Hinsdale Street, sources said that officers shot a man in the leg when he approached them wielding a machete. It remains unclear what the events were leading up to the incident, as well as how many shots were fired by police. There were no other reported injuries and the machete was recovered at the scene.

2. The Brotherhood of the Oddly Enough workers are taking steps towards a union election —and, oddly enough, the process is moving relatively fast! The new independent union, established by workers at a Bed-Stuy bar, filed its first application just over a month ago. They are quickly gaining recognition from both the National Labor Relations Board and their employers at the relatively new queer Bed-Stuy bar, Oddly Enough. There are a couple of things at play: first, the documents filed are hinting towards the union's win, and second, the bar owners may have declined to voluntarily recognize the union — hence the need for an election in the first place.

3. Amidst a rocky start — on and off the court — the Brooklyn Nets have fired Coach Steve Nash. In the last couple of weeks, the Nets' slipping 2-5 record has already put a dent in the team's playoff prospects. On top of that, they've been dealing with backlash after star point guard Kyrie Irving made antisemitic social media posts last week. Despite his longstanding relationship with Nash, the Nets General Manager Sean Marks conceded, "It was certainly trending that way, and to be quite frank, the team was not doing what it was supposed to be doing. We've fallen from our goals." But the tides of controversy haven't settled quite yet. Sources say the Nets are looking to hire Celtic coach Ime Udoka who is currently suspended after alleged affair with a staff member.

4. "Kill elected officials" and other anti-lawmaker graffiti is being addressed by Brooklyn officials. The Oct. 28 attack on Paul Pelosi, husband of U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, has brought media attention towards threats, vandalism, and other violent crimes perpetrated against local lawmakers. In Brooklyn, officials' cars have had their windows smashed, while hired paint-over jobs struggle to keep up with graffiti threats pooping up on walls around the borough. Local representatives are hoping to crack down on bars that allow customers to get out of hand, as well as address the systemic issues that have led attackers to think they ought to take up violence against elected officials.

5. Brooklyn celebrates Haitian and Dominican heritage. Last week, elected officials presented "Quisqueya": A Celebration of Haitian and Dominican Heritage. The ceremony greeted folks with Haitian and Dominican food and refreshments in the Brooklyn Borough Hall. The event honored Hispaniola and underlined the "historical similarities between Haiti and the Dominican Republic." Quisqueya or "mother of all lands" is the original name of the island original given by the indigenous Taíno of the land before the European invasion. As a result of European colonialism, the land was divided and into what we now know as Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Quisqueya, however, refers to both.
