BROOKLYN, NY — A Jewish man riding the subway was attacked Monday in downtown Brooklyn, according to police.

Officials are describing the attack as a hate crime.

At about 10:45 a.m., a 54-year-old man on board a southbound N train at the Atlantic Avenue subway station was approached and attacked by a stranger, police said.

Seemingly unprovoked, the attacker began punching the victim in the face and body, making anti-Jewish statements and forcibly removing his yarmulke, officials said.

Officials offered no other details about how the dispute began but said the attacker quickly fled on an N train and was last seen at the Canal Street subway station.

The victim was taken to SUNY Downstate Medical Center and is expected to be OK, officials said.

Police said they have released an image of a man they are seeking in connection to the attack and that the NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating.
