Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:

1. Death looms over Panamanian Independence Day celebrations after reveler was shot dead at a block party on Friday night. At about 10:40 p.m. on Friday, flying bullets disseminated a Brooklyn block party a handful of streets over from the Flatbush police station. When copy arrived, a 40-year-old man had been shot in the head—he died shortly after in the hospital. Police are still looking for a suspect. Despite the tragedy, celebrations continued on Saturday for the annual holiday with the second-largest parade in NYC.

NBC New York

2. You may have already seen them in subway stations, but cameras will also be installed in buses, announces MTA. As part of its crackdown, the 'Automated Bus Lane Enforcement System,' across the five boroughs, MTA announced that in the coming weeks, 300 buses along 9 different routes will be outfitted with cameras. However, the lenses aren't just for keeping an eye on passengers; drivers, too, will be responsible for $50 to $250 fines if they are caught in violation of bus lane rules.

ABC New York

3. Brooklyn author publishes book exploring deep wounds scoured by racism and white supremacy. Marilyn A. Massiah recently published fiction novel Black Paradox: The Folly Over Skin Color via Dorrance Publishing Company. Black Paradox follows a young American Peace Corp Engineer to his assignment in the idyllic Guyana in 1969 where he meets Sydney Parker, a woman unaware of the racial injustice that is so blatantly a part of life in the United States. Only upon her visit to the red, white, and blue-striped country is Parker confronted with, and appalled by, the absurdity of racial hatred and stigmatization that plagues the U.S. Massiah's narratorial perspective is uniquely influenced by her Caribbean heritage, a personal history she leverages in her scrutiny against America's detrimental obsession with race.
