Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. New York State lawmakers has promised to tackle cyber attacks against hospitals which began with a breach among the computer systems of a major Brooklyn hospital network. Empire State officials have vowed to make helping local governments, schools and hospitals protect against cyber ransomware attacks a top priority during 2023. Last year, a wave of attacks swept the state — a major network of Brooklyn hospitals were effected and have been forced to resort to pen-and-paper methods of organization and patient care for months now. A study just published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that the number of ransomware attacks against hospitals and other medical institutions more than doubled from 2016 to 2021 — from 43 to 91 nationally, and that figure is likely under-reported. "This is a top item on my agenda for 2023," said Steven Otis, chairman of the Assembly Science and Technology Committee.
2. Eastern Brooklyn and Queens are getting an upgrade in cancer care, thanks to a collaboration between Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) and MediSys Health Network (Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and Flushing Hospital Medical Center). Brooklyn and Queens are home to two of the most diverse communities in the world, with 2.4 million residents who speak more than 135 languages. Unfortunately, many face significant healthcare barriers, including socio-economic, language, and educational disparities — these circumstances have a profound effect on their ability to access care, particularly cancer care. According to a news announcement that was released earlier this week, "MSK physician leadership will work closely with clinical leadership from MediSys to enable the development of a robust oncology program onsite at Jamaica Hospital. Together, the team will also create a more streamlined process to transfer patients needing more specialized care to MSK locations including participation in clinical trials, based on clinical criteria and treatment requirements." 3. The New York Jets just named a Brooklyn high school football coach a finalist for the 2022 Don Shula NFL High School Football Coach of the Year Award. This season, Clive Harding led the football team at Boys & Girls High School in Stuyvesant Heights to a 10-1 record with a runner-up finish in the Public Schools Athletic League B Division. In its 26th year, the Coach of the Year award is given to a coach in the Tri-State area who serves the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school, and their student athletes. Harding receives a monetary award of $2,500 to benefit the high school's football program. Along with this award, Boys and Girls High School will receive an automatic bid to compete in the 2023 New York Jets 11-ON Tournament. Congrats Clive!
