Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:

1. Monkeypox cases have been on the decline for some time now, but vaccine eligibility is expanding in Brooklyn. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene announced that as of Oct. 6 it will be opening up 30,000 new MPV vaccination appointments. The rollout is part of a preventative measures program against MPV, a contagious disease spread primarily through sexual relations and is caused by the monkeypox virus. The expanded eligibility now includes people of any sexual orientation or have or may have more than one anonymous sexual partner, anyone who knows or believes to have been exposed to MPV in the last 14 days, or anyone else who considers themselves as risk for MPV through sex or other intimate contact. 2. Neglected Bronx and Brooklyn tenants of bug-ridden, derelict apartments have hit out with property management at Chestnut Holdings. Tenants were prepared to deliver a host of demands to property management on Thursday, but just an hour before they were denied entry by Fred Smilovic, who identified himself as building maintenance, and told the Bronx Times that the Chestnut Holdings offices were closed and denied anyone access into the structure. Tenants have been unable to contact or get facetime with their landlords for a quite a while, and after this blatant act of ignorance, they took to rallying outside the building. About an hour after their protest began, Cesar Morales, a property manager for Chestnut Holdings, attempted to assuage protestors by stating that he would take their letter of grievances to building management “immediately.”

3. The MTA has big ambitions for its 20-year plan, an assessment that will impact the city's 2025-2029 Capital Program. The MTA's 2025-2044 Needs Assessment will allot 80 percent of its funding to repairs and renovation of the NYC subway system, not least of which is the billion-dollar Utica Ave rail project. But other competing projects the MTA agenda are equally as expensive, and many are worried that with inflation rates, worker shortages, and other undeniable fiscal issues, the city will be fighting an uphill battle against itself if it chooses to take on this 20-year list of grievances.
