BROOKLYN, NY — This week, the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection said it secured more than $604,000 from R. G. Ortiz Funeral Homes to provide to consumers they exploited. The funeral home also paid $100,000 to the city in civil penalties.

This is the final chapter in a lawsuit the DCWP launched in April. The lawsuit was filed following reports that the funeral home company was refusing to provide information on the whereabouts of remains, misrepresenting the prices of its services, and failing to provide services that its customers had already paid for, among other offenses.

As part of the settlement, 28 consumers will receive approximately $104,000 in payments, leaving $500,000 for others who have yet to come forward with claims.
