Hello, neighbors. It's me, Carlie Houser, your host of the Brooklyn Patch newsletter — here to tell you everything you need to know about what's happening in the community. Including updates on:

  • Students create upcycled looks for Nike Air Max Day fashion show.
  • New Brooklyn museum celebrates failure.
  • The city welcomes spring with music, events, and more. 🌸

But first, today's weather: 🌤 Times of clouds and sun. High: 53 Low: 33.

🗞 Top stories in Brooklyn today:

1. Three months after a Red Hook warehouse blaze destroyed decades of evidence, legal advocates are pressing the city about pending criminal cases. It was recently reported that only eight barrels of evidence were recovered from the three-alarm fire — these documents are currently be reviewed. However, the Legal Aid Society is still unclear about which of their cases, past and ongoing, will be affected by the fire. NYPD promised an itemized list of everything recovered and destroyed in the Dec. 13 Hanger Fire, but Legal Aid says they've yet to hear anything, despite penning numerous letters over the last three months. 2. The Museum of Failure celebrates bad ideas and flawed designs. The city's latest one-of-a-kind museum has just opened for a limited time at Brooklyn's Industry city, featuring 150 items that were considered to be commercial failures. MoF was helmed by psychologist and innovation researcher Dr. Samuel West and showcased failed products from the U.S., China, and Europe. Exhibitions include Google Glass (a doomed brand of smart glasses), Bic's 2011 'For Her' pens, an Rejuvenique Electrical (Shock!) Face Mask which was never approved for safety, and Fat-Free Pringles, which hit the shelves in the early 90s and gave everyone a stomachache. (planetattractions.com)

3. Nike celebrated Air Max Day with an epicycle fashion show in Brooklyn. Sunday marked the 9th anniversary of Nike Air Max Day — to celebrate, the iconic brand teamed up with retailer Snipes to host an event in Brooklyn called Maxxed Out. The fashion duo created an immersive experience complete with a fashion show that showcased a first look at upcycled designs created by students at the Made Institute in Philadelphia. The event focused on sustainability, and stand-out looks featured ripped sleeves, pants turned into dresses, and transformed bits from Nike and Snipes Pieces. (Footwear News)

🐝 Brooklyn Buzz:

  • 🎶 "The earliest weeks of springtime have such a distinct feeling that I decided to make a playlist to soundtrack them. Late March/early April is a time of rebirth but also of the friction and occasional struggle of transition — the lime-green shoot emerging from the dirt; the chrysalis stage before the butterfly." (Subscription / The New York Times)
  • 🌸 "When travelers visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, they are supporting a cause that aims to educate, entertain, and conserve people through the power of horticulture. When the Brooklyn Botanic Garden opened nearly a century ago, New York City was rapidly expanding its urban footprint. Setting up a public garden was one way to guarantee the continued existence of green space, and today, the garden has become an international benchmark for top-tier municipal gardening." (TheTravel)
  • 📚 "'Long Island,' the sequel to Irish author Colm Tóibín bestseller 'Brooklyn,' will be published in May 2024, publishers Picador Books announced on March 28. 'Long Island,' set in the 1970s, will revisit the main character, Wexford woman Eilis Lacy, 20 years after the novel 'Brooklyn.'" (IrishCentral)
  • 🍛 "Clinton Hill is now home to some of NYC's most exciting Cambodian dishes [...] The front of Lula Mae has the best seats, in a crescent of tables on two levels that look out on the busy thoroughfare. That crescent feeds into a bar, where customers can sit and chat with the bartender over cocktails, beer, and wine. A line of tables follows, marching opposite the kitchen toward the bathroom. Part the curtains beyond the bathroom to discover a secret dining room, so that even when the restaurant seems hopelessly crowded, you might find seats back there."(Eater NY)
