Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. A new ferry line from Brooklyn to Wall Street is coming to Bay Ridge. Beginning March 8, sea-faring Brooklynites will soon be able to hop aboard a new express southern Brooklyn ferry route on weekday mornings, a commute that will take them along the waterfront from Bay Ridge to Wall Street. The launch is headed by the city's Economic Development Corporation as part of NYC's Ferry Forward initiative. The ferry will make stops along Atlantic Avenue and Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, before making the Manhattan stops. The new route, and subsequent itinerary changes to other ferry routes along a similar path, will save 20 minutes of average commute time to Wall Street.
2. And in other transit news, commuting on land is getting easier too! As part of their mission to make 95 percent of all subway stations accessible for all, the Metropolitan Transit Authority just announced that over 20 new elevators will be installed in stations around the city. As part of the refurbishing project, MTA will make 17 additions stations accessibility upgrades, including installing 29 new elevators at designated stations. Additionally, city officials met Friday to discuss making transportation within the city easier for commuters on the whole. A proposed plan called 'Fix the MTA' aims to make buses complete free over the next four years, as well as creating six-minute headways for subways and a 20 percent increase in service across the bus system. The legislation that would cost nearly $245 million a year.
3. Sunken sailboats have been sitting in Brooklyn's Sheepshead Bay for years — a threat to ecology, transportation, and safety. In fact, abandoned boats are one of the largest problems facing the safety and ecology of New York City's waterways, so New York City Parks took it upon themselves to do something about it. City Parks made their way to Sheepshead Bay to remove some sunken sailboats, most of which are derelict and have been sitting below the surface for years. Councilmember Inna Vernikov, raised in Brooklyn, allocated $55,000 for the cleanup effort.
