Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. At the stroke of midnight, a Brooklyn couple gave birth to New York City's first baby of 2023! Just as the ball was dropped in Times Square, across the East River Kingsley Mei arrived into the world at NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health Center. Not only is the baby boy the city's first of the year, he's also the first child of proud parents Dexin and Holly Mei of Brooklyn. If prior trends hold, Kingsley will be among the roughly 15,000 babies expected to be delivered this year at NYC Health + Hospitals facilities across the five boroughs, according to the public health system.
2. Brooklyn noise pollution has reached new heights, with noise complaints over the past couple of years hovering at 25,000. To put things into perspective, that's 15,000 complaints above 2020. Park Slope Assembly Member Jo Anne Simon is urging Park Slope residents to submit a public comment regarding the recent uptick in noise pollution by helicopters. Up until earlier this week, the Federal Aviation Administration and National Park Services were gathering local feedback on a proposed new set of rules, namely by setting a new 1,000 foot arial setback for New York Harbor tourist flights. However, many, like advocacy group Stop the Chop, believe these rules only make things worse for city dwellers.
3. A NYC pharma millionaire convicted of killing her 8-year-old autistic son was found dead in her Brooklyn apartment after being denied bail. Gigi Jordan, 62, was found dead about 12:30 a.m. Friday in an apartment on MacDonough Street in Stuyvesant Heights—just hours after U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor issued an order that would have sent her back to prison while justices considered her case. The cause of Jordan's death is unclear, although her body has been sent for autopsy investigation and officials say a note was found at the scene. Back in 2014, Jordan was convicted of manslaughter for killing her son, Jude Mirra, in a Manhattan hotel room by feeding him a deadly cocktail of painkillers, tranquilizers, and sleeping pills mixed with alcohol and orange juice. Part of her defense was that it was supposed to have been a murder-suicide. Jordan was sentenced to 18 years in prison, and just recently had appealed her case for review.
