District Profile
The 43rd Assembly District sits in central Brooklyn and covers a mix of densely populated residential neighborhoods with a wide range of housing conditions, from rent-stabilized apartments and NYCHA developments to smaller multifamily homes. The district includes communities with long-established Caribbean, African American, and African immigrant populations alongside growing Hispanic and other diverse groups, creating one of the borough’s most culturally varied constituencies.
Household incomes vary significantly across the district, reflecting both working-class neighborhoods and areas with more middle-income stability. Local economic activity is anchored in small businesses, healthcare facilities, schools, retail corridors, and service-sector jobs, with many residents commuting to other parts of New York City for work.
Public education plays a central role in the district, with multiple school zones serving large student populations and a strong presence of public schools across neighborhoods. Housing pressure remains a defining issue, as rising rents, development pressure, and ongoing affordability concerns continue to shape community debates and political engagement.
Politically, the district leans heavily Democratic, with primary elections often serving as the decisive contest for representation. Voter participation tends to surge in presidential election years, while local primaries draw a smaller but highly engaged electorate focused on housing, public safety, transit, and neighborhood investment.
