Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:

1. On the coldest day of the year, Manhattan and Brooklyn set sites on opening the city's first beach come summer. Two new beaches are under development in NYC, the first along a 5-acre stretch of public shoreline just north of West 12th Street in Manhattan. Meanwhile, another beach is being built in Williamsburg by Two Trees Management, the organization that created Domino Park as part of its redevelopment of the former Domino Sugar Factory. And while the Brooklyn beach is not set to open until summer 2028, the much anticipated Manhattan beach — will feature a kayak launch and lounging locations — is set to open this summer. If this all sounds too good to be true, in a way, it is; although the city Department of Environmental Protection boasts that the Hudson River and New York Harbor are the cleanest they've been in 100 years, beachgoers will not be permitted to swim in the water.

2. A retired police officer and her boyfriend were found dead in her Brooklyn home in what is believed to be a murder suicide. Just before 3 p.m. on Friday, NYPD officers arrived at the home on Beverly Road near E. 48th Street in East Flatbush. They found Petlyn Job, 49, and her boyfriend, Alex Delone, 56, dead with gunshot wounds to their heads, according to multiple sources. It is still unclear who opened fire. Before her retirement, Job served the 84th Precinct, and worked closely with two officers, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, who were executed in 2014 by a man who had serious grievances against police and who aimed to avenge the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown.

3. Earlier this week, a Brooklyn main received a surprising box in the mail, filled with the ashes of someone he'd never met. Hamilton Leithauser received a white USPS box to his brownstone, addressed to no in particular but "current resident." Shocked, Leithauser opened the box to find the cremated remains of someone who died on Oct. 17, 2017. Leithauser called the funeral home to tell them they had made a mistake, that he had not known the person inside the box. Eyewitness News tried to speak with someone from the funeral home to find out what went wrong, how the ashes got mailed to the wrong address, and what will happen to them now. The owner, however, could not be reached.
