Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. Yesterday, a Brooklyn man plead guilty to killing Queens woman GuiYing Ma with a rock. The 33-year-old suspect, Elisaul Perez, was accused last year after an incident in Corona last year when a 62-year-old woman was hit in the head with a rock while outside sweeping a sidewalk. She died three months later. In court on Thursday, Perez pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges. He will be sentenced in January and faces 20 years in prison.
2. Elementary school students in Boerum hill are getting a lesson in kindness this holiday season, partnering with City Harvest to help families fighting food insecurity. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the food insecurity crisis in the United States. In NYC, visits to food pantries and soup kitchens are 70 percent above pre-pandemic levels so donations especially this year are crucial. Kids at PS 38 Elementary are donating food for the City Harvest food drive, hoping to beat last year's donation of a whopping 1,500 pounds of food.
3. Crown Heights is the latest stop on the mayor's City of Yes train. Mayor Eric Adams is pushing for a 'moonshot' housing plan and long-awaited, multi-use rezoning of Atlantic Avenue. The local community board has been trying to get the section of Atlantic, that stretches between Nostrand and Vanderbilt avenues, rezoned since 2013, a plan known as M-CROWN. However, for years, the city's planning office told the community board that M-CROWN was off the table unless part of a larger mayoral rezoning process. The mayor has just stepped up in this regard, according to a statement given yesterday. The mayor's announcement addressed infrastructure needs but he did not make explicit the board's major goal of requiring an amount of non-residential floor area to be reserved for light industrial job creation. Should all go according to community hopes, the M-CROWN will help create a mixed-us neighborhood built upon mixed-use buildings.
4. Some thought the day might never come, but rents in Brooklyn and Manhattan are flattening. Seemingly undying increases having plagued the city over the last year, culminating to an average monthly cost in both boroughs that remains near record levels, up from 20 percent a year ago. In November, average rent in Brooklyn was $3,964 and in Manhattan $5,249. The sharp increases that got us here in 2021 were due to a number of factors, including post-pandemic job creation and greater demand from transit remote workers to live in New York City. Looking ahead, prices are likely to drift lower, although only very slightly. So, Brooklyn, don't expect bargains. As monthly real estate reporter Jonathan Miller said, "Plateauing of rental prices doesn't mean they will start falling."
