Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. Two teenagers were shot early this week, one "accidentally" and the other on his way home from school. A 17-year-old girl was shot and killed in a vacant six-floor apartment in Brooklyn late Monday on Eldert Lane. Cops are investigating as a possible accident, law enforcement sources and police officials say. And yesterday, just after three in the afternoon, a 19 year old was shot in the head outside of a deli in the Flatlands section of Brooklyn. He is in critical condition after being struck by a gunman in a red ski mask and driving a dark Lexus.
2. Park Slope Precinct Captain is at the top of the misconduct list. More than 30 Park Slope cops have substantiated misconduct acts on their records, but none more than the controversial chief. 78th Precinct Captain Frantz Souffrant has seven misconduct claims, all of which have been substantiated by the Civilian Complaint Review Board in 2010 and 2020. Souffrant is quoted in a complaint by construction workers to have said "I can do whatever I want," and yelled "I'm the law" at least twice during the pull-over stop. Souffrant is also on the DA office's questionable credibility list as a witness, leaving folks to wonder how he's held up his leadership position all these years.
3. And while we're talking bad cops, a Brooklyn man who accused NYPD of planting cocaine on him and forcing his girlfriend to falsely claim he kidnapped her was recently award $890,000 by a judge. The verdict was reached on Friday by the judge who allowed Sgt. David Grieco to be referred to as "Bullethead," a nickname by which he is known by many Brooklyn residents. The city pushed back on the plaintiff, Justin McClarin and his girlfriend's use of the nickname, but his lawyers argued that was the only name McClarin knew Grieco by. The criminal charges against McClarin were dismissed "because they weren't true." Grieco, on the other hand, has been the defendant of at least 50 lawsuits in which the city has previously paid $1,006,750 in settlement money.
4. The state of emergency declared in response to the spread of poliovirus after sewage tested positive in Brooklyn and Queens has been extended. In response to poliovirus levels found in NYC sewage, Gov. Kathy Hochul has extended the state of emergency to Nov. 8 in order to support statewide efforts to boost the vaccination rate against polio. To date, an unvaccinated adult from Rockland County is the only known case of paralysis in the U.S. so far, but the state is worried that there are hundreds of people spreading the virus without symptoms.
