Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. Officials are looking into the possible outbreak of a food-borne bacterial infection in Brooklyn. Campylobacter, a gastrointestinal bug that causes flu-like stomach symptoms, is often caused by consuming raw or undercooked meat or other food items that have come in contact with it. "In Brooklyn, health officials said approximately 50 cases have been reported in the borough since the start of the month." Where specifically, they declined to say. However, experts are fairly certain that case numbers may be higher for a number of reasons: campylobacter cannot be tested for in wastewater, as say COVID-19, and the common symptoms — nausea, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea — usually won't push folks to the doctor's office. Save for the very young and very old who are immunocompromised, the illness is not life-threatening, experts say.
2. An 18-year-old woman was randomly stabbed in Bushwick by unknown attacker. Police are searching for a man who stabbed a woman in Bushwick yesterday just before 10:30 a.m. The attacker took off and police said he later punched a 35-year-old woman in the face a couple blocks away near Grove and Central. Video footage shows the stabbing victim surrounded by folks on the sidewalk who came to her aid. The victim was rushed to the hospital and remains in stable condition; her attacker is still at large.
3. More that 100 schools are choosing to drop NYC's selective screening process. In a decision announced yesterday, some 90 percent of New York middle schools will forgo screening that uses grades to select their student body, opting rather for a lottery system that was used during the pandemic. This statement decision is in favor of what many believe to be a more equitable approach to admissions, one that could add more diversity to a system marked by racial segregation. During the pandemic, then-Mayor Bill de Blasio paused the selection of students based on grades; however, at the start of the 2022 school year, officials reinstated the rigorous screenings against the hopes and beliefs of many students, parents, and school administrators. The decision by some 400 middle schools to drop screenings illustrates their allegiance to the community voice.

4. A Black woman-owned, Brooklyn business has made the top quarter of Inc's 5,000 list of fastest-growing businesses in the nation. After losing close to 90 percent of her housecleaning clients in March 202o to the pandemic hit, entrepreneur Ingrid Murray quickly looked for other avenues to keep up her personal revenue stream. When she received a seven-figure contract from MTA, Murray and her Prospect Cleaning Service team started working tirelessly to clean massive subway stations around NYC. Over the past three years, the company has experienced a noteworthy 651 percent growth, placing Murray and the Prospect Cleaning Services at 1,001 of 5,000 on Inc's fastest-growing business list.
