Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. Suspect arrested for L train murder was let out on supervised release. Last Friday, 43-year-old Tommy Bailey was stabbed to death on the Brooklyn subway line, heading southbound. The suspect, a homeless man named Alvin Charles, was charged on Thursday for Bailey's murder. Charles was accused of attempted murder last year on a separate case and was out on supervised released when he fatally stabbed the subway rider last week. The violence comes after a string of violent subway crimes this year, as the city tries to come to grips with how make riders feel safe.

2. A former Brooklyn associate principal and high school teacher was sentenced to 15 years for "child enticement and possession of child pornography." U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York announced yesterday that Jonathan Skolnick was sentenced to 15 years in prison for enticing young children to send him nude and sexually explicit photos of themselves. Williams said that for approximately seven years Skolnick had abused his position to commit these vile offenses towards multiple children. Skolnick worked as a high school teacher in Brooklyn before becoming associate principal at a middle school in the Bronx, where he worked until his initial sentencing in September 2019.
3. A nearly $9 million reconstruction of the Grand Army Plaza kicked off on Monday. While a variety of landscaping work will be attended to this fall, the larger restoration of the 1892 Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Monument will not commence until spring 2023. Landscaping attention given to the surrounding areas — the bits of off-limits green space surrounding nearby Plaza Streets East and West — will be focused on hazards and invasive species that have filled the area. The larger spring renovation will fix a variety of much-needed-repair spots on the arch, as well as spruce up the sidewalks, interior ceiling, and staircase.
