1. A Brooklyn psychologist has gone abroad to help children traumatized by Russian soldiers. Alex Yentin has been working with Ukrainian kids and their parents as part of an ongoing support effort to effort to help Ukrainian refugees in countries including Poland and Germany. The 52-year-old says that thanks to a supportive staff and stable life in Brooklyn, he has been able to help others who are facing displacement right now across the globe. Since the Russian invasion began, at least 5.2 million children have been displaced according to a UN report, and 1,148 have been injured or killed since February. Yentin has sat down refugees from cities like Kharkiv and Mariupol, some of whom spent weeks underground without food or electricity as Moscow's bombs rained down. He works with small groups of refugees, providing a safe space for them to share their heavy memories of the war, along with exercises for expressing their anger. For families and children, Yentin is trying to help them adapt to living in new countries.
2. A Brooklyn father has been arraigned for punching his baby daughter in the head—a blow that killed her. The 33-year-old is facing a long list of charges of manslaughter, assault, criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child in connection to the violent death of his 23-month-old daughter, who allegedly died after she was hit in the head, according to the local prosecutor. The father claims to have hit his daughter in the head on accident when he was waking up from a nap. According to the investigation, the girl's mother returned home and found the child lethargic. Family members later saw child bleeding from the mouth, Gonzalez said, citing the investigation. The child was taken to Brookdale Hospital where she died the next day. The New York City Medical Examiner later determined the child had suffered a traumatic brain injury with the cause of death ruled to be blunt force impact to the head.
3. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOL! The World Cup is bringing people together in Brooklyn this holiday season. Since the tournament kicked off in late November, Beco Bar in Williamsburg has been buzzing with soccer fans from across the borough. Just this Friday, When Brazil's World Cup matchup with Croatia kicked off at 10 a.m., the local hotspot was packed to capacity, and the overflow crowd wanting to watch the game at the Brazilian restaurant looked on from the outside in the crisp December air. Rumor has it that patrons lined up almost an hour early to get in. "I think this is a little community that we've built here in Williamsburg," said Henrique Stangorlini, the owner of the 13-year-old Brazilian restaurant. "The relationships that we have here, it's really real. It's like back in the day old school and the draw on this, it's this. I know every single person that's been inside his restaurant and it's in a way really cool to see that we're a real staple and we just bring people together." On Friday, Brazil lost in penalty kicks to Croatia, but the spirit at Beco lives on.
