🗞 Top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. Come March 20, the Barclays Center will host a huge job fair for New Yorkers coming out of the criminal justice system. The fair is being hosted by Reform Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to probation, parole, and sentencing reform nationwide. So far, over 4,000 job seekers have registered for the event and 43 companies have confirmed their attendance, including both local companies and national corporations like Amazon, CVS Health, Lowe's, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, the New York Fire Department and more. Despite the post-pandemic labor shortage we find ourselves in, former incarcerated people have an employment rate of 27 percent — higher than national unemployment rates during the Great Depression — and two thirds of those who are working make an average of $20,000 a year. Reform has created this event to try to advance economic prosperity, public safety and greater public benefit especially for those that have been affected by the criminal justice system. 2. High school student can ride the ferry for cheap in New York. The city announced on Thursday that high school students will now be included in the NYC Ferry Discount Program. For $1.35 (half price) students can use the ferry to get to and from school, work, and other after-school activities. The new fair is an attempt at guaranteeing all students have equitable access to the ferry. High school student touting the program held up signs at their local dock advertising the new prices, ferry maps, and other slogans. One of them read: "City Council didn't FAIL so now we can SAIL." (NY News 12)
3. The Pratt Institute is opening new facilities at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The private university is moving into building 3 where they will conducting environmental and technological research. The new 40,0000 square-foot facility will be a new hub for robotics research, information visualization, sustainability, community development, environmental sensing, and digital archaeology. The research space will expand upon the Institute's ongoing relationship with the historic shipyard. (Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
