🌱 ReImagine Lefferts Initiative + Safer Streets Plan Approved
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

Hello all! I'm back in your inbox this morning with the most important things happening these days in town. Today's briefing includes:
- Prospect Park Alliance receives grant to research and educate about Brooklyn's history of dispossession of Indigenous Peoples
- DOT's plan for safer streets just got approved in Southern Brooklyn
- The latest on the cyberattacks affecting Brooklyn hospitals
But first, today's weather:
🌧 Afternoon rain. High: 42 Low: 41.
📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Brooklyn who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.
I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our readers to local businesses they need to know. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.
Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. Nonprofit stewards of Prospect Park just received a $275,000 grant to explore and educate about Brooklyn's history. The Mellon Foundation will give the money as part of the Park Alliance's ReImagine Lefferts initiative, a PPA project aimed on telling the stories of Brooklyn's Indigenous people, the Lenapehoking, upon whose lands sits the Lefferts Historic House. The initiative will also focus on the African people who were enslaved by the Lefferts family. According to the ReImagine Lefferts initiative's, the initiative will "seek to forge a thoughtful dialogue about the legacy of slavery and exploitation of marginalized communities" and support scholarly research about the history of dispossession on the Lefferts land. On Feb. 11, PPA is hosting a community conversation at the Prospect Park Boathouse from 1 - 4 p.m. to discuss the initiative and share the new research that's driving it. Learn more about the larger vision at the link below.
2. City leaders in Southern Brooklyn have given DOT the green light to upgrade pedestrian safety measures along some of the borough's busiest bus routes. The Department of Transportation (DOT)'s five-year Capital Improvement Project was approved last week; the plan would affect streets and sidewalks along the B82- SBS route, which spans from East New York to Coney Island. Existing medians will be reconstructed, landscaping will beautify stops, and widen bus stops, while curb islands and pedestrian street islands will work to calm street traffic. Additionally, according to the proposal, DOT will also add ADA accessible platforms for commuters with disabilities. For more details, and a look at the streets that will be affected by the plan, visit the link below to read more.
3. Among other breaches, an investigation into the cyberattacks against One Brooklyn Health found that patient data had been copied. Just before the holidays, OBH said it had detected a cybersecurity incident and immediately took their systems offline, forced to resort to pen-and-paper methods of operation. In the weeks that followed, patients complained of electronic health records outages. And while the cyberattacks were detected on Nov. 19, investigators recently said they have reason to believe that patients' online health records may have been accessible to hackers as far back as June 9, 2022. A review of the data suggesting this sort of access is still under review, but OBH has released a statement assuring patients that there is no evidence to suggest that any of the information has been used to "commit theft, fraud or other harm to individuals."
