Seniors sponsor life-changing therapy for young boy with autism
Residents of The Watermark at Brooklyn Heights and Watermark for Kids sponsor two-week intensive therapy

James DePauw, age 10, arrived in New York earlier this month to begin a lifechanging therapy his family believes will transform his life. DePauw, a resident of Euless, Texas, was diagnosed with autism at age two. Because of his skill delays and medical complications, James requires assistance with everyday activities. His family is hopeful that will soon change, as James completes a two-week intensive therapy program at The Melillo Center for Developing Minds in Rockville Centre.
“James is a super sweet, loving little boy. However, he faces many challenges because he has a lot of sensory underdevelopment in his brain,” said Laurie DePauw, James’ mother. “James is nonverbal, which has made it more difficult to find providers locally who can treat him. When we found Dr. Melillo, we were incredibly hopeful that this treatment would give us forward momentum in James’ healing journey.”
The treatment is being sponsored by Watermark for Kids, a national nonprofit associated with Watermark Retirement Communities. The Watermark at Brooklyn Heights, a luxury retirement community located in the former Leverich Towers Hotel at 21 Clark Street in Brooklyn, is also sponsoring the family’s stay in New York.

The program uses the Melillo Method™, a holistic approach to treating patients with a broad spectrum of brain related disorders, including autism spectrum disorder. It was created by Dr. Robert Melillo, best-selling author of Disconnected Kids, and one of the most respected specialists in childhood neurological disorders in America.
James’ treatment includes twice-daily office visits five days a week, neurological care, occupational therapy and laser treatment and therapy. The treatment is costly, which led DePauw to contact Watermark for Kids after learning about the nonprofit from another family the organization has supported.

Since 2007, Watermark for Kids has supported more than 2,800 children nationwide by providing financial assistance in education, sports and fine arts, and health and well-being. During that time, the organization has donated more than $1.15 million to help kids aged 6-22 overcome barriers and access life-enhancing opportunities. Residents of Watermark Retirement Communities, including The Watermark at Brooklyn Heights, support the organization by hosting fundraising events and sponsoring Watermark Kids in their area.
“We’re so happy to provide James and his family a place to stay while they are here in New York,” said Rocco Bertini, Executive Director of The Watermark at Brooklyn Heights. “Our residents are some of the most kind and generous individuals I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and it brings them great joy to give back in this way.”
During the DePauw’s visit to New York, they met residents of The Watermark at Brooklyn Heights during an ice cream social at the community on July 16. James’ parents will also had the opportunity to speak with residents and share James’ story and the impact that treatment will have on his life.
“Our long-term goal is that James could function like a normal 10-year-old boy and go to school and play sports or learn an instrument,” said DePauw. “We believe this treatment can change his life and we’re so thankful to Watermark for Kids and Dr. Melillo for their part in his journey.”
