Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. Police are looking for a sexual predator after he exposed himself to a 7-year-old girl in a Borough Park building on Friday. Around 5:30 p.m., the young girl was reportedly approached by a man who lured her into a building on 38th Street, exposed himself to her, and tried giving her money to perform a sexual act. Fortunately, the girl was able to get away, NYPD reported. The predator is suspected to be in his mid-30s and was last seen wearing a black hooded short sleeve shirt, black pants, black sneakers, gloves and a gray hat. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
2. Three were slashed outside of a Bushwick Halloween party this weekend, suspect at large. Just before midnight on Sunday, a fight broke out outside the Market Hotel music venue, bringing the event to a violent end. Two were slashed in the face and a third in the thigh. All victims were taken to Kings County Hospital, their attacker fled from the scene. The police have not yet made any arrests.
3. The Legal Aid Society and Red Hook Initiative are educating young people about their rights empowering them against police misconduct. The 'Know Your Rights' program is a 12-week training series that aims to tackle a lack of knowledge amongst city residents about their own rights. The program is specifically geared towards young kids, as they are often targeted by what some call policing "harmful tactics." Students learn about the NYPD gang raid tactics and what the groups call over-inclusive gang labeling. They will also learn about how to handle police encounters safely and how to avoid having their rights as New Yorkers infringed upon. Upon completion, students can host their own series and become leaders in their communities.
4. The New York Historical Society's latest fixture is a magical undertaking, one that explores the Salem Witch Trials, the legacy of it happening, and the defendants of the accused. "The Salem Witch Trials: Reckoning and Reclaiming" is currently on view, revisiting a dark chapter in U.S. history during which more than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft, and 20 people were executed. The exhibit examines everything from the legal proceedings, the global spread of witch-phobia during that time, and the social implications imposed upon women. Artifacts on display include old maps, legal signage, original paintings, and even contemporary art of "modern-day witches."
5. Clover Hill is Brooklyn's "tiny-but-mighty" Michelin-starred restaurant that reimagining fine fining. Owners Clay Castillo and Gabriel Merino opened their cozy 700-square-foot restaurant in Brooklyn Heights right around the time the pandemic hit in 2020, making for a stumbling first couple of months. The space — lined with vintage books and art, with room for 30 guests — reopened earlier this year and brought a new chef onboard to help the restaurant find its footing again, Detroit-raised Chef Charlie Mitchell. Mitchell has now become the first Black chef to run a Michelin-starred restaurant in the metropolitan area. "We work hard, and are proud of what we do," he said. "We're not going to be gone tomorrow. We want to establish ourselves as a real destination, one of the great restaurants in New York City."
