Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

1. The state's attorney general is suing a Brooklyn property owner for taking advantage of at least 20 Chinese immigrants and their families. Letitia James is suing companies TCJ Construction and 345 Ovington LLC, and their owner, for illegally selling immigrant families non-existent condominiums in Bay Ridge and collecting fraudulent monthly "mortgage" payments and building fees totaling more than $5 million. The defendant never provided purchase deeds to any of his tenants and used monthly deposits for personal expenses, rather than holding the funds in segregated escrow accounts as required by law.

New York State Attorney General

2. Nov. 8 is approaching, here's what you need to know before Election Night:

  • New York State remains ever blue with twice as many Democrats as Republicans. Currently Dems control the governor's seat and have supermajorities in both chambers of the state legislature.
  • Gov. Kathy Hochul stepped into her role after her predecessor Andrew Cuomo stepped down due to looming impeachment threats. Hochul is running for governor against Republican U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin of Long Island; should she win, she'll be the state's first elected female governor. Hochul's platform stresses abortion rights and acting on climate change.
  • There is a potential light at the end of the tunnel for New York Republicans, as Democrats failed to pass new federal and legislative political maps that would have cemented their solid blue voting majorities.
  • Roughly 1/3 of the state's house races are considered competitive, especially those in Long Island and the Hudson Valley.

3. The Brooklyn Democratic Party hosted a "get out the vote" gala to counter rising GOP momentum in the state. The Democrat's midterms campaign was in full swing on Tuesday night with a star-studded list of New York's elected Dems giving speeches with a similar message: get to the polls and vote. Hochul's lead against Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin is narrowing, and on Tuesday she urged voters to halt the "The MAGA Republican Trump train" in its tracks by voting.

City & State

4. Play pétanque on Friday for Carreau Club's grand opening in Brooklyn. Pétanque (pronounced puh-TONK), sister game of the more well-known bocce (it's all boule-related), has come to Brooklyn after Carreau Club was the nation's first pétanque bar. The Carreau Club's outdoor courts, first opened in August 2020, became a huge hit. Now, they've added 6,000 square feet of winter-friendly, indoor courts to the existing 2,000 square feet of outdoor space. Co-owner Aaron Weeks is hoping that these indoor courts will be an opportunity to bring pétanque to a wider audience in NYC. Carreau Club is opening this Friday, Nov. 4 at Industry City in Brooklyn — grab a group of competitors (or just friends) and head over!
