🌱 Students Face Eviction + New Crime Report + Vegan Donuts

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

(Patch Media)

Hi all! I'm back in your inbox this morning to walk you through all the most important things happening locally. In today's newsletter, we'll cover these stories and more...

  • Students threatened with eviction after their college failed to pay rent
  • Crime's down across the city, but stats aren't enough to console a Brooklyn subway attack victim
  • Did someone say vegan donuts?

But first, today's weather:

🌤 Clouds and sun; not as cool. High: 52 Low: 36.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Brooklyn who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our readers to local businesses they need to know. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

🗞 Top stories today in Brooklyn:

1. Management told students to pack up and leave after their college failed to pay rent on a Brooklyn apartment building. The King's College in Manhattan offers housing for students in a number of different apartment buildings across the city, including a high-rise in Brooklyn. Students faced eviction notices this month saying they need to pay January and February rent within 14 days or leave. King's College students are currently paying their school for housing — in turn, the college is tasked with paying building management. Confused as to why exactly they've been asked to leave, students are now claiming tenants rights in an effort to keep their rooms. (NBC New York)

2. Despite falling crime rates, a Brooklyn subway attack victim remains unconvinced that NYPD's crackdown efforts on subway violence are actually effective. Sharon Robinson of Brooklyn was brutally beaten in January on the N train on her way home to Coney Island — she was unsure if she'd make it off the train that night. According to NYPD's latest report, crime has been 9 percent citywide as of February 2023 — police have credited this slowdown in part to increased surveillance and patrols at subway stations around the city. However, numbers aren't doing much to console residents like Robinson who says she is now always "looking over her shoulder" whenever she leaves the house. (WABC-TV)

3. A new entirely vegan donut shop opening in Brooklyn is making it easier to indulge responsibly. Vegan restaurants and cafés have been popping up all over the city for the last decade, and you can probably count on most menus to offer at least a few vegan-friendly options. But at Cloudy Donut Co., there's nothing that isn't vegan. Visitors can pick for 44 different sweet selections, including eight new options coming each week. Owner Derrick Faulcon opened the first Cloudy Donut in Baltimore before coming to New York City last year and making it the first Black-owned business to open in Brooklyn Heights. Faulcon hopes to open another location in Manhattan come 2024. (News 12 Connecticut)
