🌱 Theater Brings Darkness To Light + Presidential Win Son Visit

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

(Patch Media)

Happy April, Brooklyn! I'm back with your fresh copy of the Brooklyn Patch newsletter. Keep reading for the most important things happening around town. Today you'll read about these stories and more:

  • An independent movie theater that was once an old funeral home — quite aptly.
  • The Brooklyn Mirage pulls strings with the mayor in liquor license legal battle.
  • Taiwan's president visits Win Son bakery.

But first, today's weather: 🌧 Showers and a heavier t-storm. High: 70 Low: 40.

🗞 Top stories in Brooklyn today:

1. An independent cinema in Greenpoint is "bringing darkness to light." Film Noir, on the corner of Leonard Street and Meserole Avenue, is a 54-seat theatre wholly focused on showing underground and hard-to-find films. The theater is founder Will Malitek's passion project — he's headed the joint for 20 years and has called Greenpoint home for 33. What's more, Film Noir has its own shadowy origin story: After moving from its original location on Bedford Avenue, the cinema transformed an old funeral home at 122 Meserole Ave. into the intimate screening room it is today. 2. The mayor's office lends a hand to a troubled Brooklyn venue in its battle over a liquor license. Avant Gardner, home to the famed outdoor concert space known as the Brooklyn Mirage, has some friends in pretty high places, including Mayor Eric Adams. Over the last few years, Avant Gardner has been enmeshed in a constant legal battle with the State Liquor Authorities (SLA) who have expressed repeated concern about "rampant" drug use at the venue. Owner Juergen "Billy" Bildstein claims the SLA is unduly harassing his business and was able to pull some strings with Adams to secure a private meeting with Gov. Kathy Hochul in hopes of resolving the SLA's issues with his venue. (Gothamist)

3. In the world of food: A Brooklyn Shake Shack is offering a 'Super Mario Bros' themed menu this week, and Tawain's president visited Win Son Bakery. The new 'Super Mario Bros.' movie comes out April 5 — celebrating the release is the Shake Shack in DUMBO, who, this weekend, is serving up themed menu items like the "Gold Star Shake" (peach-and-strawberry frozen custard with blue sprinkles and dried star fruit) and a mushroom portobello burger with muenster, fontina, and Parmesan cheese, with Calabrian chile-tomato sauce, and pepperoni (don't miss free giveaways for the first 100 guests each day). And in more exciting news, the president of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen visiting the famed East Williamsburg bakery and restaurant, Win Son — she ordered a fan tuan, a mochi donut, and the bolo, among other items.
