🌱 UAW Goes On Strike + Fighting Maternal Mortality + C-Grade Hospital

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, hello. It's me, Carlie Houser, your host of the Brooklyn Daily — here to impart all the most important things happening in town. Including updates on...

  • Fair wages are super chic right now, according to Brooklyn Museum union works
  • Borough president launches maternal health education campaign
  • Park Slope hospital receives low passing grade upon inspection
  • New job possibilities on Brooklyn's waterfront

But first, today's weather:

🌤 Partly sunny and breezy. High: 48 Low: 34.

Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

1. Brooklyn Museum workers fight low temperatures, wind, and rain to protest for better wages. On Tuesday, the Brooklyn Museum hosted a VIP opening gala celebrating the institution's forthcoming Thierry Mugler exhibition, 'Couturissime.' Despite poor weather conditions, the event was well attended — but more showed up than just the gala-goers. Dozens of museum union workers braved the weather to demand better wages in response to the unsatisfactory proposal presented by the museum after nearly a year of negotiations at play. Staff members represented by UAW Local 2110 gathered to draw attention to the issue and inform many of the gala's high-profile guests about their union concerns. UAW members were also protesting outside the New School in Manhattan early Wednesday morning and into the evening.

2. Brooklyn borough president launches maternal health education campaign to combat the higher maternal mortality and morbidity rates in predominantly Black, Brown, Caribbean, and Latino communities. Yesterday, President Antonio Reynoso launched a multimedia, multicultural public health initiative aimed to connect Brooklynites with information and resources for healthier pregnancies. English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole ads will go out to select Brooklyn bus stops, subway stations, and urban panels as well as social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Ads will direct readers to educational resource guides. Reynoso spoke openly about the larger, more long-term systemic changes needed to combat maternal mortality rates — higher in Black, Brown, Caribbean, and Latino communities — but is proud to take these first important steps in a larger plan to make it safer for Brooklynites to grow their families.

Black Star News

3. A hospital in Park Slope has a huge hand-washing problem — in fact, one of the worst in the country. Brooklyn Methodist Hospital on 7th Avenue and 6th Street received a C grade in a recent report on health care safety nationwide. And while we all know that a C is a passing grade, it feels a lot better stamped on a math test than on a hospital. While New York Presbyterian, the health care organization that manages Brooklyn Methodist, confirmed in a statement that care for its patients is its top priority, the local Park Slope hospital ranked below the national average on a number of health and safety protocols. The most glaring disparity was handwashing. While the best hospitals received a 100 score, Brooklyn Methodist received the lowest score in the ranking: 15, well below the 69.55 average. You can learn more about the grading breakdown at the link.

4. The Brooklyn waterfront continues to be a rich seedbed for possibility, this time poised for new job growth opportunities. BP and Equinor (one of the largest wind developers in the world) have launched a $5 million clean energy community grant program to support sustainable growth, workforce development, climate justice, and the empowerment of underserved communities in Brooklyn. The program is an investment in offshore wind energy and impacts most directly the Sunset Park neighborhood. The multi-million-dollar fund is intended to spur job education and training in historically marginalized communities. It also hopes to support minority and women-owned business enterprises in New York to foster innovation and sustainable growth.
